I considered opening the chimney up and putting one in.
Went to someones house that had a wood burning stove, first thing that struck me was the smell. Everything smelled horrid, the whole house stank of it, you could even smell it off of the guys clothes. It made an awful mess and is pretty high maintenance. A good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors in the room too!!
It will also make other rooms of the house slightly colder since it draws in air to use for combustion. The air it uses must come from somewhere.
Then the cost, for what it is it's pretty expensive for something that you potentially won't use very much and is surplus to requirements.
That's just my opinion, went to see one and didn't like it. I suggest you do the same before committing to it.

If you could smell it in the house it had been badly/incorrectly installed...
If you choose the right stove and install it correctly with a direct air feed it will only draw combustion air directly from the outside...
It will not make your other rooms colder - met no-one who regrets installing one - quite the opposite.

Not necessarily - every installation is different and stoves vary widely.
Get some expert advice specific to your installation (and what type of stove you want). I have a direct air feed through the floor void - but if you have a solid floor that will not be an option. But as the previous poster pointed out - a supply of combustion air is critical so an anti-draft combustion air vent through the wall may be necessary.
Always a good idea to look at the entire ventilation/insulation strategy for you house around the time you are installing a stove as the age, layout,construction and orientation of your house will have an effect on the stoves operation and efficiency. a well installed stove, correctly used with the right fuel will heat your home effectively and efficiently. Badly installed or badly used and they can be bit of an expensive disaster.

I am just up the road from you near Avonbridge they fitted a Stovax insert in my Fireplace last year. Very professional and a good guy to boot. Local support as well IF you have any warranty issues which i think could be very handy.
