Aberdeen restaurants

We are going to be in Aberdeen on the wife's birthday and I was wondering where's the best place in the city centre for a nice meal for her?

I've only been to granite park once and it was really pretty poor. Tepid, greasy spring roll starter, under-seasoned and over cooked fish, snotty service. It does have great reviews so perhaps we were unlucky.

My favourite places are Silver Darling, Bistro Verde, Moonfish, Malmaison, Montmartre, Yatai, Nargile, Shri Bheema, Cafe Boheme (in no particular order!)

I find a lot of the newer trendier restaurants focus a lot more on style rather than substance. Just my $0.02

Any idea what kind of food you would like? Aberdeen's got loads of decent restaurants, a few poor ones and only a few really, really good ones IMHO.

I was thinking of a traditional kind of meal. She wouldn't really appreciate a curry or Chinese type meal for her birthday I would think. A similar menu to granite park would appeal to her.

The Marcliffe at Pitfodels, about 10 mins out of the city centre, is certainly worth a look. Good food, wonderful service but without the pretentiousness of some of the places already mentioned.

Supposedly closing down at the end of this year so might be your last chance to try it.

I agree with Lefty's suggestions with the exception of the Silver Dollar. I used to like it but recent visits have put me off returning. Somehow seems a little dated and tired now whilst being as overpriced as ever!

Cosy little place. Portion sizes aren't the biggest, but the food is excellent.

Read the menu as it doesn't have the biggest of choices.

It also is often fully booked at peak times.

Usually the service is very good too.

Good call on the Marcliffe! I've not been to the silver darling in 6 months or so, maybe it's going downhill? Shame, used to be superb.

Again, only been once and it was variable. Some of the food was excellent, some was poor. Service good but I didn't like the atmosphere or the "I'm fae aiberdeen, big in oil and considerably richer than you" clientele in the bar.

In fairness, that clientele moves around, they were in Malmaison for the first few years too.

If you like beer their Chester Brew is awesome!

Reasonable selection of beers and whiskies but the bar staff when we were in didn't know the first thing about their beers or their whisky. In that sort of place, with those sorts of prices I'm expecting really good bar staff, like malmaison really.

Another vote for Rustico if you like Italian. Their specials are usually particularly good. Am I the only one who thinks Malmaisson is vastly over-priced for the quality of the food?
