It's a good road, I've only ever driven it in the dark but I'm sure it must have some nice views going down that area of the country. There's one weird little thing though, you'll gradually notice your ears popping as you're driving.Just googled it and someone said brought on to Moffat looks good.

A702 alongside the Pentlands, more or less parallel to the A701 is very nice too. It has some lovely corners, very smooth surface and generally wide lanes. Ideal hunting territory for big cats or hard riding exotics. Ideal for a good blast.You could go out the A701 and return on the A702 (I would do it the other way round though, not sure why.)
If it is just sight seeing you are after, the roads circling up and around Arthurs Seat are quite nice.
What is your rental? (Mine always turn out to be VW Golf or similar.)

Take a map or electronic equivalent as not easiest place to find. Watch for sheep!
Heading along the East Lothian coast is a good drive. Head East out of Edinburgh and pick up the A198 , this then takes you through some vilages such as Longniddry , Aberlady , Gullane and I would advise passing through Direlton rather than bypassing it before reaching North Berwick. There are some challenging bends and some decent straights and also amazing scenery containing some of the country's finest golf courses.
You can then continue through North Berwick on the A198 which will take you past Tantallon Castle before you head for East Linton or Dunbar where you can pick up the A1 dual carraigeway back into Edinburgh.

The sheep were standing on one the cattle grids last time I used it!
There's also the road to Innerleithen from the A7 which is another favourite of mine.

There's also the road to Innerleithen from the A7 which is another favourite of mine.
To get there take the A1 out of town,go through the hole that is Tranent
and follow the Hillfoots trail signs through Ormiston & Pencaitland,then follow the signs to Duns. Coming back,turn right at Pencaitland and blast along the A6093 to Haddington,great fast road with gentle curves,no need to go at less tahn 60 Gassing Station | Scotland | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
