Moving to Aberdeen

Hey guys!
I'm starting a new job in September and will need to live up Aberdeen Monday-Friday.
I've no idea what's best out of renting a flat/house/room. Ideally i would like to get a morgage on a property located in a village outside Aberdeen but, I assume I would need to be in employment for so long before going down that route.
My place of work is going to be right at the harbour so ideally somewhere within reasonable commuting distance.
Any advice or good websites for finding a property would be appreciated. I don't know where to start

For the shortest commute time wise west of town is best for cutting through the worst of it as most traffic seems to move North/South in the city, I work in the harbour and from the cults area can be at work in 10/15 minutes, Coming from the south/north will find you stuck in some pretty bad traffic during normal commuting times at either Bridge of Don/Dyce or Bridge of Dee and take you 30/40 minutes.
What will you be doing, assuming oil company of some sort?

If you're at the Harbour for work then look at property in Dyce, Inverurie or even Insch and just get the train into work. Commuting by car to anywhere in/around Aberdeen at remotely normal hours is, IMO, utterly horrendous virtually wherever you are trying to go.
I personally think Inverurie is a much nicer place to be (has plenty going on too) than town itself and is only 25 mins away on the train.

Be prepared for a shock with Aberdeen rental prices for flats
Average rent across the city across all property types is now above £1000, and well ahead of the Scottish average of £700, and one/two bed flats get let usually within 10 days of being advertised, if not sooner

I'll be a trainee instrument designer for a large oil company. Really excited as I've been trying to get into the oil & gas industry since I left school.
I've been looking on gumtree and the ASPC website and I'm shocked at the prices! I can rent a room for around £350-450 which isn't too bad! Might do that until I finish the apprenticeship where I could look at getting a mortgage.
Is there any areas to avoid? I know car crime is rife from what I've heard.

I would dispute that car crime is rife to be honest, so don't worry about that. There has been a lengthy spate of it by a bunch of thick school kids who are all trying to out-do themselves to get in to the knickers of the 15y/o trollops but it's genuinely not that common. Most of them have been opportunistic walk-in thefts where they have taken the keys from inside the owner's house. If you're reasonably vigilant you won't have a problem.
It's worth considering not moving in to the city itself. Your money will go much further a short way out in to the shire.
Congratulations of getting the apprenticeship btw. With the general slow down in the industry of late there aren't many places taking on large numbers of younger people. All the best with that
