Double glazing recommendations

I've posted this in diy but I thought I'd post here too as particularly looking for companies serving Central Scotland.

We are looking to replace our current leaking and draughty units in our Victorian house. There are some that are approx 20 year old pvc (large bay windows) then there are some that have replacement wood sash units fitted.

I liked the idea of the replacement wood units but now we have lived with them a couple of years I'm not sure I can be bothered with the upkeep. Especially as the house is slightly elevated and the South and West sides get a fair battering from the Scottish weather.

I would initially like recommendations for upvc sash replicas particularly suppliers/fitters in Scotland but also wood sash replacement companies. Thanks

I can't help with UPVC, but if you go for wood I'd recommend Mozolowski & Murray - www.mozmurray.co.uk I got them to replace my sash and case windows a couple of years back and they were great. Not cheap but worth the money. Maintenance is minimal and they'll last far longer than 20 years.

If it's a Victorian house, are you in a Conservation Area or are there other planning restrictions? I know when we replaced the original windows in our previous Victorian place in South Queensferry, several years ago, the planning dept. were insistent we had to have wooden sash and case.

We've got CR Smith windows, I think they do sash UPVC. Good quality and good service.

After the crap I've been through with buying massive windows for my extension I've seen the double glazing industry for what it is. Most of the sealed glass units come from a short list of suppliers, Glass Solutions for example, and the glaziers just build an extruded case around the unit - for uPVC, or a timber case for traditional. They all over-charge in the process.

For what it's worth, I used JayMax joinery in Edinburgh for all 17 of my windows. They also supply finished units for other 'suppliers' in Edinburgh/Scotland. I toured the workshop and chose my wood style.
