Folk who hit other folk's cars -then drive away

My better half was parked at the Aberdeen Kittybrewster shopping centre car park yesterday afternoon and when she returned to her car found that some low-life with the moral backbone of a slug had hit it hard on the n/s wing and door and then driven away. (Passenger door now doesn’t open properly and it will need a new/ repaired front wing.)

Anecdotally it seems that this type of behaviour is fairly prevalent in today’s society and is rapidly becoming the norm. To my mind it is simply unacceptable and should render the offender culpable both criminally and civilly.

So in the unlikely event that any Ph’ers saw a silver (but muddy) Legacy being skelpt yesterday afternoon outside TK-max perhaps they could send me a PM

Total sympathy for you I do wonder is it uninsured drivers?

My wife parked in same supermarket car park and twice was hit same wing/door first time she was lucky and in car and able to get person who claimed they were unaware they had hit wing and door (£1200 damage) second time not so lucky the had done a runner by the time she got back

As they happened about 6 weeks apart is was quite funny to see bodyshops reaction "can you fix this" - again!

Just to counteract this (as it's not often you can do)...

One of my neighbours decided to drop a present off to next door on Boxing Day.

Rather than walk the 30m between their houses, he drove (!) and when reversing back, skidded into Mrs Chimp's C3 Picasso rear door/arch.

Nobody witnessed it and he could have gotten away with it, but instead he phoned me a wee while later to confess and will be paying for the bodyshop to fully repair the damage.

I had feared he may try and do it on the cheap, but if anything, it's completely the other end of the spectrum as he doesn't want his reputation to suffer (he is Indian and I believe this is a major thing with him - external image/reputation).

But, to agree with the OP, people who do this and drive off should be dragged over hot coals.

OH was in hospital getting an operation and my X5 (2 months old) was hit and driver never stopped.

Still makes my blood boil!

I suspect my post was made in an effort to vent my spleen as much as anything else so I empathise with those who have suffered similar incidents . Nice to hear one good tale though - my faith in human nature is (partially) restored!

Another story from this week to help your faith in humanity improve!

I was at a takeaway in Inverness, and a land rover reversed into my MX5, putting the towbar through the fibreglass bumper. Guy gave me his details, said he wanted to sort it outside of insurance, and to come see him the next day.

I got a couple of quotes from bodyshops, in the range of £1-2k, expecting the bloke to insurance-up when he saw the numbers (I know I would have to!) but I met up with him, showed him the quotes, and he was more than happy to bank transfer the amount there and then.

Is it wrong that due to hearing so many stories of people driving off, leaving false details etc, that I want to buy the bloke a bottle and a thank you card, just for being honest?

My wife's car was damaged similarly, luckily someone spotted them and left a note on her windscreen.
Later that day she saw the car and followed it.
Respectable old couple. Recently retired. Live in a nice area.
The old stopped at a coachworks to see about getting his damage sorted. Turns out he'd already had a quote.

I found what happened to my missus far more annoying, guy reversed into her at traffic lights because he was in the wrong lane and tried to reverse into her lane. He admitted fault, told the witness he was at fault etc, gave my her his details. Never heard anything afterwards, she went to her insurers who contacted his insurance and they were unable to reach him and has been sitting like this for months now.

Joined the club myself in the last few days.Car has been parked on the road right outside since last Friday and when I was bending to pick up a poop (thanks dog!)I noticed the offside rear of my car has scuffs and blue paint on the bumper.

Not a major damage/problem but still bloody annoying. I have my suspicions that it's a bloke that lives in the next road with a truly shonky Galaxy - he was parked behind my car a day or two ago. I tend to take note when that's parked anywhere near as I don't want my car to catch rust!

Same thing happened to me on Sep last year when car was parked at a gym in city centre. Couldn't open the drivers door as the wing was pushed up hard against it. Only had car 4 days, it was mint with 3k miles. Needed new wing and door skin. 1180quid in total to fix. My excess is 500quid so decided not to go thru/inform insurance as it will just increase my policy and risk.. O'h and changed gym too as the management were not in the slightest bit interested..

I have been at the end of this, some one caved my rear door in on my mint xj40 and did a runner years ago in a shopping centre car park, utter scum with no remorse!! I feel your anger!!!

Had this happen a few times to me. One was my Peugeot 207, Two days before someone bought it, a neighbour reversed up the bumper scuffing it. Never found out who it was as I was living in a flat and all parking was on street.

Second was only in September there. My 20 hour old fiesta got keyed parked outside a shop beside my Grans. Still makes my piss boil.

Also had numerous dents in doors from people flinging there doors open. I even try and park the polar opposite of the car park to everyone.

Although! one woman took her car across the front of my dad's Quattroporte in France one year. Left her number and all details and paid the full whack for a repair through Maserati / Ferrari Monaco... Very honest which was refreshing!

I reversed into a Corsa two days ago in the RRS, late at night on a quiet street in Surrey, no witnesses.

I chapped three doors before I eventually found the owner and left my details. He was over the moon that I had been so honest about it.

The thought of leaving in the hope of getting away with it never crossed my mind, even though it's going to cost me at least a grand.

just had back bumper scrapped by some one who cant reverse out of a parking space,unlucky for them its on the car parks cctv and now the local bobby will be giving them a visit as to why they hit and ran,car park wont release the details to me unfortunatly

Woke up to this in the summer, someone had run right down the side of my VXR8 during the night! caused over 3k of damage in total, then just buggered off!!
