As reported in the Scotsman:

Basically, the current SNP transport minister, Derek Mackay, is now “quite open” to deploying more camera systems “where it is merited”, as he feels that the cameras have "turned the corner of public opinion", although how he has measured public opinion is unclear. He also apparently said that no decision had been taken as to whether the cameras would stay on the A9 after dualling is completed.

Other possible candidates include the A1, the A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness, the A92 in both Fife and north of Dundee, the A702 which links Edinburgh and the M74, and the A68 and A697 in the Borders. The A82, A96 and A835 are also mentioned by the IAM as possibilities, as well as routes with high motorcylist fatalities such as the A811 and A84 in the Trossachs.

The SNP are in serious danger of losing a lot of support over this. Many of their supporters want an independent state but not a nanny one.

I actually don't have much of a problem with the average speed cameras on the A9. I have logged data since they cam into force and my travel times on the A9 are slightly less that before they were in place - presumably as lorries are going faster so traffic is generally slightly quicker. During the day on the A9 there is no point in passing anything anyway - you just get caught behind something else a short distance in front of you. I am glad of my sat-nav providing data on my average speed though - it allows you to know when you can allow for a bit more speed to get past something that is being especially annoying! smile

Waste of money putting them on the A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness. Due to HGVs, tourists and small towns the average speed along there probably closer to 40mph rather than 60.

It appears from what you are saying that it is the increase in the permitted speed of HGVs that has improved matters. Unfortunately, it seems as if this improvement will be chalked up to average speed cameras.

I gather, although it is not a road I know, that a similar thing happened with the A77: improvements were made to junctions at the same time as the average speed cameras were introduced. Reduced accident rates were then attributed entirely to the cameras, which were hailed as a great success.

Yes, but the increase in HGV speed limit was only allowed along with the ASCs.

Perhaps there was a reason for that...

You could say similar for other routes such as A82, till the places where an effort to promote road safety will, no doubt loose out-on the benefits of cash generation over simple safety policing, which was the object of the exercise before the cash grabbing Quangoes came along, with only idea in mind ,self-preservation.

Scotland has been slow to follow in their English counterparts footsteps, where an SCP exists solely to ensure it's existance.

Spot on. People are really getting sick and tired of the way the Snp are making these nanny state changes. What they are doing to the roads are bad enough but they are starting to interfere everywhere almost for the sake of it.

Hmm this was the guy who authorised the A9 average cam project even before the consultancy was over.

They [snp] have a history of ignoring the publics views even when the consultancy shows total objection to their plans.

A77 road improvements were delayed - av speed cameras brought in as a stop gap.

Road alterations were then completed - took out all right turns across the A77 from Spittal to Dutch House.

Its difficult to say if its improved the road as you get a lot of bunching as people dont want to increase speed to pass something now. Average speed cameras have been there since July 2005
