Looks like there is going to be one less wedge on the roads after tonight since mine was just piled into some metal railings!

Driving down a main road approaching a some crossroads, planning to carry on and go straight over there is a Hynudai Accent coming the other way toward me. He's indicating (his) right to cross my path and turn off the main road. He slows down coming to a stop to wait for me to pass by before turning in. I get about a couple of car lengths from him and he all of a sudden launches his car into my lane right in front of me! He I swerve to the left avoiding him, but the gap that's left isn't wide enough to get through so the front left of the car smshes in to the railings at the corner of the crossroads.

So his car is unmarked and mine is in a bad way, but neither of us are hurt. It was right outside a police station so there was a couple of police there instantly. The other guy (kid about 18 year old) come over and explains he's been driving for only a month and knocked the accelerator while braking causing the diversion into my lane! I mean, seriously...I can forgive a new driver for lack of raod manner or ettiquette or something, but inability to use the pedals??

Details exchanged and police reports given. Car is home now (under it's own steam, being followed by AA van) and I'm worried about repair costs. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow, but the front corner is smashed, the headlight pod and the surrounding part, the spoiler there is damage to the bonnet, but not sure if that's repairable or not. Looking at prices on the TET Mouldings site (hoping they are still current prices) I reckon about £1100 for replacement panels, assuming none of the damaged ones are repairable. Would the labour involved in fitting them and putting it all right push the cost to 'uneconomical to repair' level or is there some hope that the car will be salvageable? Understand it's hard to say without pictures.

Just really really do not want the car to be written off.

Really sorry about that. Did it drive straight on the way home? If the chassis and suspension are OK then it should be repairable - depends how much time you're willing to put in. Try to get some sleep. J

Sad to hear about that Uriel. If it does get written off maybe you can buy it bck and get it repaired. But still best if it can be repaired anyway.

Hope you can get it sorted.

Sorry to read about your trouble and hope it has a happier outcome.

I wonder whether the insurers shouldn't be recognising the rarity of these cars and assisting in their retention on the road. After all, the total output of Wedges is less than the (average) annual production of Chims!

Mind you, the premium would have to be higher, insurance companies are not known for altruism!

Does anyone know whether vintage/veteran cars are treated any differently by insurers in the event of a crash? I guess it's left to the enthusiast who owns the car to restor it to its previous condition.

What a complete sod.. really sorry to hear your news.. hope that it can be sorted through insurance, if you have a choice try and get it done at tvrbodyshop or similar for a top job..

Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, but I don't think the insurance companies treat classics like this any different to normal cars - it's all based on value.. the up side (if you can call it that) is that you have the option to buy the car as salvage (normally peanuts) and using the insurance cash payout can then get it repaired.. when some toe-rag stole my Mums car and subsequently drove it into a tree, we got £2500 insurance payout (after haggling ) then bought the car back for £250 salvage and had it repaired for £600 - she then kept the car another year and sold it for £1250.. having a nice holiday out the proceeds..

Best of luck..

Thanks guys, calmed down now and had a chance to look at it in the light of day. Still not pretty and I don't know enough about fixing fibreglass to know what's repairable and what's not. Sorted the insurance, they're going to let me choose where to get the work done (or at least get a quote from) and that's what I'm about to do.

I'll try tvrbodyshop.com and TET.

The car did seem to drive fine (other than the wing rubbing on the wheel when turning right so I'm guessing it's mainly cosmetic. I gather the wiring loom goes through the nearside wing though? Lights were on and wouldn't switch off and the car wasn't charging at all. Had to drive home with the AA mans battery pack think connected and sitting on the passenger seat.

If it's any consolation, I had a similar experience a couple of years ago with an American classic. A lady driver had failed to cancel her indicator, I pulled out she took out the front of the car! Anyway, I had an agreed value on the car, but the insurers wanted me to take half and the car to repair myself. So you will probably be able to negotiate a deal to keep it. I, however decided to take the money and run. That's when I got my 1st TVR...

So, TVR Body Shop said basically no way. It'll be a write off. Rang Richard Thorpe at RT and get the complete opposite. All will be well, will get fixed no problem under insurance.

If I hadn't dealt with him in the past and didn't hold such a high opinion I would have sworn he was promising the earth just to get the car there and land the job

Feeling a lot happier now, insurance has been sorted and within an hour the car will be on a low loader heading for sunny Sheffield.

Also while it's there I can see about getting some other things looked at, maybe some upgrades

Even if there is some damage to suspension/steering/chassis, that looks repairable. GRP always looks worse than it it. Maybe TVR Body Shop have too much work on or can't be bothered to work on older cars. I'm sure Richard will do a great job and your pride and joy will be back looking better that ever - Streaky

This looks similar sort of damage I had when I ran into the back of someone else, I had replacement spoiler, bumper and front repair section ( everything from middle of wheelarch foward) and that cost about 1300 quid in panels from TET. Repairs including a colour change and new hood came to another 3400 quid. The insurance wrote the car off ( value 8K) I bought the 'wreck' (it was perfectly drivable) for a grand then went on holiday with the change -mind you I didn't get the car back for nearly 6 months.....

Looking at that job - I would attempt to repair it provided the chassis wasn't damaged in anyway.

From the looks of it the pod has taken the brunt of the impact. The corner can be built up again and the cracks filled in.

Had a similar smack in my series one though not as bad. If it were me, i'd have a go if the car was written off and save the money.

Don't really understand the response from TVR bodyshop.
I had my 350 back ended heavily last year. I was advised that to have a new back end fitted would mean it was a write off. TVR bodyshop said they would repair it instead. They did a superb job.

My brother in law runs a Midas kit car. A transit reversed into it last week. He took it to Webbs (TVR bodyshop) and they said they would rebuild the front end. Can't be that busy if they are prepared to work on kit cars!

Did you speak to Jason Webb?

Yeah, it was Jason I was speaking to. Said that if it was agreed value at about £7000 or £8000 then it would be ok, but otherwise it would be uneconomical to repair.

If it was agreed value at £8000 I'd have driven it into a barrier long ago, written it off and gotten myself a 400SE
