Speakers on parcel shelf
Discussion
I would like to put some largeish speakers on the rear parcel shelf, i understand the fuel tank is directly under this if so if i cut with a jig saw am i going to cut my tank, have thought about putting them on the upright bit of shelf put i think when the hard top is stowed it would rub on the back of the speakers and when roof is down would cover speakers anyway. am i asking for trouble.
The axle and brakes are under the parcel shelf - the fuel tank is behind the rear panel - on a convertible..
Not sure about FHC cars..
Some Wedges have the speakers on the side at the rear
but if you try to fit 6x9 inch rears then then foul the seat belt reels - so need spacers (MDF) - I'm doing mine at present !
I'll post pic's if you want !

Jigsaw - go to a DIY store and look at one !
As you have a convertible - do you have any rear speakers already ?
If they are already on the rear panel then mount new ones there - it's the best sound position.
If speakers are on the sides then you can mount them there but as I said 6X9 inch speakers will need spacers. You can make then out of MSF (wood from a DIY shop).
If you want them in the rear panel - then the fuel tank is behind it - don't think the rear of the speaker will show from the boot but you need to be careful will power tools and petrol tanks - to be sure
remove boot trim and look at the space you have ...
have others done this ..
Will just add that - I've gone for the side rear panels as there were already speaker holes there .. I did not want 4 rear speakers - it would look ugly.

I think the petrol tanks are under the parcel shelf. There are two metal strips one at the bottom rear of the shelf and one on the slope behind the seats. These are to mount the tank straps to. Mine did have speakers in the back vertical panel and the backs were showing in the boot. It didn't seem to cause a problem stowing the hood, but I didn't like them here and so moved them to the side panels, which I think is standard.
This is for a soft top, don't know about a FHC.

My Wedge came with factory fitted speakers in the rear bulkhead complete with two power amplifiers screwed to the bulkhead between the speaker magnets.
Lovely sound - but the lid wouldn't go in flat and that was unacceptable.
During the rebuild two new speakers were fitted in the sides of the parcel shelf roughly where the seat belf thingumyjigs used to live (4-point harnesses now).
If you want a totally impractical Wedge I can reccommend the rear bulkhead route - sounded superb.
If you want to occasionally carry anything more than a slimline briefcase then the roof MUST go in flat.
In summary - my stereo ain't as good as it was, but I can now go to Le Mans
See you there next week!

I fitted mine today .. 6x9 Kenwoods ..
See pics ..
(shows the packing I made from MDF(9mm) with a jig saw) - I used one per side
and installed :
I also plumbed in that thick speaker cable ..
It does take some messing about to get the seat belts working too... it's a very small place for a big speaker but I did not want to leave 2 holes where speakers once were !

What about mounting them in the boot, facing forward through the bulkhead? Chims have ventilation holes there which, in my case, hide dirty great bass speakers (withinthe boot and mounted facing through them, rather than cutting the bulkhead).
Don't know if older cars have the same feature?
