I have a big tin of red hammerite left over and was wondering if it is a good idea, they are not too bad but could just do with smartening up, Any ideas

Dave - I usually use an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment & wire brush to get all the loose stuff off. Also use a screw driver for those hard to het at places (top of out riggers.

I clean up the rest of the painted chassis with T cut - it gets rig of grease / oil without leaving a residue.

I use Hammerite smooth to finish off - two coats are best.

Top it all off with some waxoil - I only use this on the out riggers.

IMHO Hammerite is much too hard (brittle) to be of much use on chassis members. It will chip off very easily. I'd recommend POR-15, which is very, very tough. "Bash with a hammer and it stays put" tough. Even a coat of Waxoyl won't help that much.

Yep POR15 is the stuff

Also I found 3M clean and strip disks excellent for getting the surface rust off
