Can only speak for MKII but similar I think.
The nuts / studs (2) are to the side and above air intake about 75mm in from the pods.
Maybe possible from under car - depends on clearance from spoiler to rad to chassis to stone guard etc.
Having tried many ways I finished up taking the light pods out.

Having tried many ways I finished up taking the light pods out.
It used to be the case that there were captive nuts glassed into the inside of the shell; the bolts were accessible once you took the number plate and indicators off. If the bolts rusted (and they did) you had to take the headlamps out to get at the nuts... the one in the centre was a 2@ to reach.
It may be you need a combination of moves...
