Can anyone suggest a modern wheel /tyre replacement for the current 7J 205/60 x 14's presently on my series one 280i F/Head, which would fit, and retain the present rolling radius ?

I was thinking of 15" wheels.

You are going to get almost as many problems with 15" as with 14". A modern eqivalent would be a 215/40/17 or a 205/40/17, both are within 1% of the rolling radius compared with the guideline of 3%. On 16" rims you could use 205/45 or 205/50, both with a 1.8% error and on 15" you could use a 205/55 as per the Griff front wheel (1% error.) It depends what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks for the info'.

The car is currently fitted with the (Momo?) multispoke type wheels, which are in need of refurbishment.

I know it's down to personal taste, but to me the wheels look too small in comparison to the body, and I don't like their 'fussy' appearance.

I'm not looking for anything radical, just something a little more simple in design. The 205/55-15 sound good - don't want too low a profile.

Incidentally, my speedo reading seems to bear no resemblance to actual speed anyway.

I have a set of Borbet alloys and they really suit the wedge shape, I run 225/50/16 on the rear and 205/45/16 on the front, no rubbing at all.

Sounds interesting. Any chance of a pic ?
Where can I locate some?

Cheers - Graham.

Certainly on my car, the cross-spokes were made by MSW. My Esprit has near-identical ones from an earlier period which were made by BBS.
The Wedge is not (IMHO) an easy car to find 'suitable' wheels for: most modern designs are too 'rounded'. Most folk seem to choose a 5 or 6-spoke pattern, with my preference being for fairly chunky spokes (I know how they make alloy wheels... )
It is quite common for TVR speedos to be a little, shall we say, optimistic... mine is calibrated not in mph, but in 'fibs'...

Comparing the speed read out on my Road Angel( gps so 100% accurate). I get the following spedo readings at 70mph:
350 wedge = 70mph
taimar = 70mph
Audi A4 ( 2ys old ) 78mph.
I always assumed tvr speedos would be out. But mine are spot on.

Well Ian, I think we are in agreement as to style.

I'll start to shop around soon.

My speedo never seems to get above 60, but that's probably because I don't trust it, and because I'm a sad old git who is just not going fast enough !
(You'll know those cameras on A177 Durham Road).

I think it's more that the old girl gets the shakes (from the back) much over that speed, so wheel balancing will be carried out soon, as well as a closer look at the drive shafts.

She blew through the rad cap after switching off this evening. I'd just had a good run.
Presumably heat-tranfer, though the bonnet was up.
I'll be putting some back-up leccy fans back on, for traffic hold-ups. Runs cool enough otherwise.

Are you sure that you've not transposed the numbers there? 205/50/16 f and 225/45/16 r would give both an equal height of tyre wall front and rear and be approx a 1% error on rolling radius.

Dig through previous threads before purchase

I remember a couple of owners having serious problems with wheel clearance moving to 15in from 14in.

Clearance was inceased at some point in manufacture to allow 15in as standard - sorry don't know when.

WHAT bloody cameras? You mean the ones at Thorpe Thewles or some others I don't know about? I went for a hoon down that way just t'other day... :smileyforcrappingmyself:

Allow me to take you out in the 390 sometime, so you have a ballpark idea of TVR Wedge 'comfort'...

This is not applicable. When TVR moved to 15" wheels they also increased the rolling diamater by in ch because they kept the 206/60 profile. Grahamw48 amd wedget are maintaining the original (smaller) rolling dia. even with 16" or 17" wheels.

I work on the principle that an electronic instrument is probably more accurate than an analogue one, especially if it involves magnets, the passage of 17 years and TVR...
So working from the factory-quoted figures that my car makes 25.5mph (give or take) per 1000 rpm in top, that would equate to a theoretical maximum (at 6000 rpm max; although the engine can pull further than that through the gears, I have a limiter on it) of 153. It was supposed to be good for 146 when new.
However I can get the speedo off the scale at 160, when the tacho says somewhere around 5200, equating to about 132.6 mph. There is a legal requirement for the speedo to be within +10% up to 70mph (it should not under-read), but nothing specified after that. So it can be as non-linear as the maker sees fit. And they obviously did...
I even find that if I'm following a car through 50 mph roadworks (where people tend to stay glued to the limit), I'm going slower than everyone else. At 2000 rpm (51 mph) the speedo reads about 55...

Yes Ian, I mean the cameras near Thorpe Thewles.
I'll happily take you up on your offer of a ride when I have time to spare from work, which is keeping me MUCH too busy at present (when I'd like to be driving my wedge ).
It does help me to pay for new wheels, etc, though.

To the other guys:
Thanks for the info.
Naturally I'll be wanting to take up the same space under the wheel arches.

I see secondhand wheels for sale everywhere, but as I don't know whether they have the correct fitting for my wedge, it makes me hesitant.

Just did a rash thing.
Went out and read the name on my wheels !
They're Compomotives (cross spoke).
