I've got a 400SE and I've always had trouble with the exhaust rattling against the rear suspension when the engine vibrates. I've just noticed looking at photos posted on this forum of someone else's 400SE that their exhaust is routed over the driveshaft on the nearside. Is this the only routing used on 400SEs? If it is, that would explain my problems. At some time prior to my ownership, a previous owner has routed the exhaust below the 'A' frame on the nearside. This means the exhaust is the lowest point on the car (approximately two inches clearance) and the 'A' frame rattles against it on bumps. Is this routing definitely wrong? Or is this another example of some wedges being different? TIA

This is as far as I know the correct routing on the 400 . Over the halfshaft .

agreed .....over the half-shaft .....where it rubs nicely if not hung correctly.
Manifolds-centre section-loop over half-shaft (kicks out to the left rear wheel)- rear section across to exit on right (400SE)

Over the half-shaft is right. My old system & the new stainless one both knock when accellerating out of low speed right handers...

If you've got enough revs on you don't really hear it!!

Even my S1 Tasmin had the (twin) pipes going OVER the halfshfts. Sounds like someone's bodged yours...

The 400SEs all had the same layout, although prior to that the V8 Wedges had used 5 different permutations, and thats not including detail changes, and yes the only ones that went under the "A" frame were SEACs

Hi

On my 40, mine went over the halfshaft as per above post, but I changed to a stainless system recently and had the pipe come straight out under the axle and then a 90 bend straight on to the original pipe feeding the exit.
In the end this is no lower than the silence at any point, so only grounds out over the normal speed bumpps. Just need to get a stainless 90 bend

My stainless replacment (now 4 years old) is straight down the centre of the car, under the diff hanger. at the back, it does a 90 degree turn, then a 90 degree upward turn, finally comming out of the origional hole in the bumper.
Over the years, the pipe has changed profile from round, to oval as the toll of many speed bumps have taken to gounding it out at this point.

The reason for me takign this route, is because I have a single parger pipe than was fitted as standard, as because of the origional exhaust routing, bending the larger diameter pipe was not physically possible.
