Anti-squeal compound between the caliper and the backplate. The proper stuff is a non-setting goo, but coppaslip works pretty well too.
mine has copperslip and still squeels but not all the time. I wonder whether there are supposed to be anti squeel shims fitted though?I dont have any!
file a larger leading edge on the pads and copper grease the pad and caliper slides, sometimes if it is excessive i file a groove into the centre of the pad (if one is not present).
If one is present they can sometimes foul up with dust and surface rust. if the car covers low miles each year this can be the problem.
just my twopenneth !!

Mine do it a lot. I assumed it was a build up of dust stopping the calipers moving freely so cleaned then out, polished them and gave them a squirt of Coppaslip. The improvement lasted about 1000 miles. I was just about to investigate, thinking it may be sticking pistons, but perhaps it's another "They all do that, sir."
