Odd engine noise at BBWF
Discussion
Well last night as it was too wet to continue on the new engine install, I decided to have some fun and take the old unit apart to find the fault eek!
Well took the sump off, and looked very hard but still no signs of trouble, took the front cover off and all ok, took the crank out and no signs of wear at all.
Started to move the pistons up and down the bore one by one and it seems like no 4 is not moving as easily as the rest.
Did not get time to remove the head, but it would appear that possible an issue with piston ring snapped / siezed ?
Now got a nice pile of bits on the garage floor and thinking of what to replace in the rebuild as a spare just in case. Can you fit shorter conrods to increase capacity ? Will it nned new shells etc as I cant remember how to check them and seems very little wear for 70k
Did the db meter get used at bbwf as I think I won with the loudest idling engine !!

Hi Paul,Thats really wierd, i could have sworn that the noise was a knackered big end bearing!
Had a bit of a weird one once some years ago with a P6 V8 rover. . to cut a very long story short, i discovered that one of the cylinder liners in the block had become loose, and was sliding up and down slightly with the piston when warm, hence tapping on the underside of the head. It sounded like a dodgy tappet, but was really obvious when i removed the head and found a piston sized ring of metal that had been cleanly punched out of the Tin head gasket!.maybe the piston little end(gudgeon pin) is knackered??
Saw your other thread on putting in the new engine, I take it its the Chim lump you had?? what mods are required?

It was from a Chim but pre serpintine, but still has a different front cover to mine !
Had to put a hole in the front cover to let water out behind the waterpump - as it had different pump on - to the rest of the standard cooling system, but may have ba%%sed it up due to not enough for a hose to grip on to. So may need to change the timing cover yet.
Other than that having to modify the alternator mount as not as much room as original timing cover, trying to find a fan belt for the power steering after modifying power steering mount.
Would like to try and put 1 continuous belt ala serpintine - think I saw one at bbwf - but would probably need more modding !
Does not seem to be much room for the dist to turn in , and not too sure what timing to set too yet - (4.5 BV)
Got some handy tools to prime the pump and set tdc accurately so slowly getting there
