around the waterpump /alternator area its not the water pump as new one fitted today along with a new stat as over heating(still runs fairly high not as bad
though)it makes the car sound rough could it be my alternator? any ideas.

Yep could be......mine did ......just take the alternator drive belt off , run the engine and you will soon find out........could be excess bearing play

Not just the PAS pump is it? I have a nice whine from the front-end, can't decide whether it's PAS pump or the duplex timing chain - but the pump is favourite.

I quite like it...

Well that's a let-down - I thought it was supercharger
whine !

Sounds like alternator bearings. I had new bearings fitted to mine at a cost of £30

Could also be misaligned pulleys. A lot of variation in water pumps, especially with the length of the output shaft. Check with a good straight edge that the pulleys are aligned.

Does it make more of a noise on full steering lock, as that's what mine does, so I know it's the steering pump. Have a couple of spares but never got round to changing as still steers.

Also might be stress on the steering pump caused by worn / seized uj's as mine were. Swapped them and not steering pump not quite as noisy

I have a V8 Discovery that does that - when I queried it I was told they all do that and it is the power steering fluid rushing through the hoses and that the simple cure was to fit larger bore hoses !
Haven't done this so can't say whether that's right or not.
