Well finally managed to get the head of the dead 4.0l as found no bottom end damage. Only broke my 2 16mm sockets, so had to buy an impact socket !
Not sure how to describe the mess of one of the pistons
It looks like something metal has been fired into combustion chamber mashed around at 5000 rpm taking bits of the head and piston and then welding them to various other bits of the head or piston
Not very pretty looking and something a skim is not going to resolve, unless you can skim 5 mm off
So looks like need a new head and piston at minimum to build up as a spare engine / ornament. Off to scour ebay now !

That sounds about right, good job not using the injection system from the old engine and have another one on there.
Will have to look for missing bits from old inj unit!
That would probably explain the suddenness of the fault as well, must have turned into the hotel too quickley for something that had been dislodged
Hopefully get the manifolds and an adaptor for the oil pressure switch to run up engine properly today and finally get my garage back if I can shift the block to back of garden

Whilst your at it, check the valve guides are complete and make sure nothing has got lodged inside the inlet tracts just waiting to drop down into the cylinder after your expensive rebuild! Are your heads ported or stock. I have some intermediate 4.0 parts here that I have no use for.
What parts do you have ? Need a piston and a cylinder head (standard valves )to be able to start contemplating a rebuild. Everything else seemed to be ok with very little movement of big/ little ends etc etc. But still thinking on a large upgrade to this engine maybe cam, followers, springs etc ?
New engine nearly complete, but does not seem to be oil circulating so still not running it and waiting for adaptor to get oil pressure guage.
Tried priming the pump using a prime tool in place of the dist but after about 2 spins of the drill, it locked up, so either primed properly or I'm just

Used the priming method you mentioned myself (it should be possible to continue turning the oil pump shaft!), and 'locked up' sounds like an oil pump problem to me (Including not producing any oil pressure). Perhaps best to take it apart and have a look. In theorie it is simple to be overhauled, but have not done it myself.....

I have the 4.0 crossbolt engine internals and a pair of stock intermediate heads. You can pm me if these may be of interest to you.
