Spare Parts Kit
Discussion
I was wondering if it was viable to start some form of "spares club" whereby we had a store of parts that we could call on to use for trouble shooting purposes.
Maybe a basic kit containing one each of: temperature sensors, ignition module, distributor, coil,HT lead set, coil, ECU.........you get the picture?
So it works like this:
1.You get a fault on your Wedge, so rather than spend your loot on buying new parts and using trial and error to find the problem (and weve all done it! and i know that a lot of garages do it and bill us accordingly!)
2.So you ring up the parts keeper and request the parts you think you need.
3. The "kit" arrives so that you can tinker till you've found the fault.
4. Send the kit back plus the money to replace what you keep.
Doesnt have to be new parts as long as they are known to be working.
Maybe even somebody like Tim Lamont could hold a stock for us to use.
gotta gome batteries on its way out!!!!!!!!!

I think I've got the full kit at home anyway
ECU - 4.0l
Flapper meter + filter
hot wire meter
coil
dist
plenum chambers
inlet manifolds
injector pack
leadset
wiring loom
alternator
pressure relief springs + valves + oil pump gears
block
crankshaft, camshaft + 7 pistons / conrods + 1 head
fan assembly
water pump
What more do you need. I feel an ebay sale coming on
All available for borrowing to any fellow bodgers I mean wedgers
Even a spare car at present as can't seem to get rid of it. Maybe I should hire out the 350 to you all whilst you fix yours ? Once my 400 is running again and it's nearly there

Taking this a step further, what about starting a wedge owners club?
I recently renewed my insurance and had a very interesting conversation with the valuer at the insurance company and he suggested the the older TVR owners are not best served by TVRCC. His comparision was with the MG and TR versions.
His suggestion was that a seperate owners club for older cars may also provide a cheaper insurance policy. As the Manning policy is targeted at new cars and not us.
This may be worth a seprate debate. How many of us are frustrated at our local region, driving to a pub and sitting and eating lunch rather than driving?

Both ideas have my support. On the spare parts side, some form of pooling would enable us to obtain some of the more difficult to find bits. We could source through e-Bay (may even stop us bidding against each other and hiking the price), or perhaps enable us to buy complete, but unroadworthy, vehicles and strip out the good bits. The Wedge Owners Club is a great idea. IMHO there is no need to go for a 'bells and whistles' club with fancy magazines and regalia. We only need a loose association of like minded individuals. I am sure the insurance savings would cover any costs we may have. I don't see it as an alternative to TVRCC, but as a supplement to further the specifics of the Wedge fraternity. I, for one, would be a member of both clubs. If there is any interest, I'd be happy to make further enquiries on behalf of everyone.
So much for my spare parts, did not have the vital spare rotor arm ! As this seems to be a problem for me. Anyone else have problem in putting rotor arm on and geting dist cap back ?
Any know a part number for rotor arm , as the one I bought from shops fitted the 350, but not the 400 and both have the same dist and cap.

Mine did that. Old dizzy, removed the rotor arm as the metal strip was loose and the weights came off (pulling the arm off lifted a shaft and dislodged them????). Didn't find out straight away but the arm took a bit of fiddling to get back on and fit the cap. The dizzy had to have the weights fitted back and eventually died so had to have a new one.
Not saying this is the same for you as I don't know about these enough but my experiance.

I got a good deal on insurance because my wedge is now over 20 years old and I'm a member of the Matchless owners club. Many other wedges are coming up to classic insurance status too.
I think a wedge owners club is a good idea, it already exists through this forum really. If those who want to be in but don't drive a computer could be kept informed by a designated 'buddy' who regularly reads the wedge forum on PH we could increase the reach and range too.
As soon as you get into typewritten newsletters and postal costs, it all gets bogged down in my experience.
Not sure what the insurance co's would require for a wegde club to be recognised for discounting purposes, but it'd be worth finding out...
As a seperate club for Wedges maybe we could also get a deal on other motoring items as well as insurance
Like breakdown insurance, tuning parts, petrol ?
Sounds like a good idea in my mind, when I was in the Celica club the insurance companies would ask us for the value of other members cars etc, to get them there gauranteed price. Other than that we used to do much the same as this forum, visit places, have meets , meet other countries clubs, get invited to track days etc etc

Paul,
I recently changed rotor arm and dist cap on my 1990 400SE: QH part no's - Rotor arm XR120. Dist. cap XD212.
Hope this helps.
Managed to get one yesterday from motor factor, took the dist in to check it fitted. £11
it cost me for a little bit of plastic with brass on it !!
Started the engine fine last night, well when I say fine I mean it runs for 10 secs
then cuts out due to some ahem taking out of alarm and not realising imobilizer was part of the alarm
Oh well now need to try and take out imobiliser or put alarm back in with lots of gaffer tape holding the wires together again.
This will be back on the road whilst we have some sun, hope we get an indian summer in Sept !
