fuel problems on 280i
Discussion
hi,
I have ready a number of articles, on my 280i the fuel pump doesnt come on until the engine is running. It says in the bible that it should start with the ignition, any one have any experiance of this ?
My thoughts are perhaps the wrong relay has been fitted, need to check the bible to say what should be installed./
Cheers
Colin

Hi Colin,
I too thought this, but infact to make the fuel pump operate you remove the green two pin plug from the metering body. It is kinda crazy but the fuel pump is inhibited by a short circuit. This is common to all Capris , Sierras, Granadas, and some other german cars I won't mention. Best to buy the 2.8i Capri CIS supplement, as it is only about £12, and gives you details like what pressures to expect from the warm-up regulator etc. IMHO a MUST for the 280i - nobody knows about CIS anymore at garages.

Hi Grady,
The title is "Ford Capri 2.8 Injection Supplement to Ford Capri '74 onwards workshop manual" Call MotorBase (0845) 226 7232 they had them in stock a while back...
You will then need to make a fuel pressure test jig, using a 7 bar presure guage, a fuel tap, and some wierd connectors, that you will have to order from seperate suppliers. Hooked mine up today, and following instructions in the "supplement", it seems my main pressure regulator is locked - should read 5.5 bar with engine off and pump rumming, and test jig valve shut, but mine pegs the 7 bar gauge when I start to shut the fuel tap - probably goes much higher!
For the homebrew tester you will need: 7 Bar presure guage, and fuel tap from Fuelsystem.co.uk, and some 6mm tail banjo connectors in 8mm and 10mm from BGC motorsport, and LOTS of 8mm and 10mm banjo washers. This rig will cost you about £40 to make - or if you are feeling rich you could buy the one from Snap-On for £350 - up to you.
I think mine is accurate to 0.2 Bar, the Snap on one to 0.05 .
-Jim (probably too much information eh?)

According to the 280 manual there are 2 implementations for the safety relay (UK and US) operating from the coil LT supply but my early Tasmin has a 3rd option which is just a relay in the fuel pump circuit. This has never worked properly on mine so the connecter has always been disconnected at the airflow meter and the pump buzzes away all the time. Might try and fix it soon though
BTW the manual has info on the pressures etc aswell.
