Socket size for rear hubs on 350 / 400
Discussion
38mm if memory serves me right. You will need a 3/4" socket drive and a 6 foot scaffold pole to get it off. I actually did it with a 1/2" strong bar instead of a 3/4, but it was touch and go as to whether the bar would break or not, as the scaffy pole puts serious amounts of stress on it.
Halfords did me proud a couple of years ago.
1x 38mm, 1/2" drive, impact socket.
1x 2' long, 1/2" drive, chrome vanadium breaker bar.
1x 30" long, 1/2" drive, torque wrench 45-243 lbf.f.
All are Halfords professional range which I believe is made by Sykes Pickavant and comes with a life time warrantee.
I can't remember the prices but it was reasonable.
The hub nuts came undone with the breaker bar alone (no extension) wheels on the floor, handbrake on and a helper on the foot break.
Re-torqued to 220 lbf.f with a drop of thread lock and checked every day for a couple of weeks.
Some time later when a driveshaft UJ detonated I took it to a garage to have the hub nuts undone and their 3/4" pneumatic impact wrench didn't touch it! Had to use a big vice and a long pole.
The moral is, with a suitable leverage you can move a mountain.
