Anyone know what source vehicle did TVR get the boot lid gas struts from for the 400SE?

Probably a tvr special, but RT Racing has them listed in his catalogue for boot and bonnet

Dimensions aren't a problem, but the gas pressure is. TVR used 100 Newton units, most other cars use struts with upwards of 180N. Too much force might crack the GRP or (in the case of the FHC) the tailgate glass.

Hi Gandalf,
Concerning your boot struts, I am in the process of getting new gas springs from the USA to hopefully fit my 350i. I found this place where they are $15 each!!!!!!!. If you require more info let me know.

Hi thanks for all the replies but if I cant get a definitive answers to these struts I have found a manufacturer here in UK who produces struts to any pressure or length in either mild or stainless steel and will be checking prices with them once I have measured mine up - will post details later.

Has anyone tried gasless struts, i use them on military kit cos gased struts dont work at -46oC. when i get bored of propping up my bonnet with a bit of pipe i'll look into them.

Wedge automotive sell them at around £35 (I think). I've been thinking about a set due to getting craked on the head whilst looking in the boot! let me know if you find a good source or details of a re-gassing service.

Regassing the original struts shouldn't prove too difficult. There are plenty of places that offer this service.

My boot lid popped up as I was driving in a TVR convoy to a show day! Nice one....

The boys reckon it was my air brake

I only use one strut now...works fine.

I found an exact match for my bonnett gas struts here in the US for my 280i. I can give the info if anyone wants. They probably have boot struts also.

"Strongarm" or "Strong arm" part #4644

Of all the makes I think Strongarm is the only one that doesn't have the 100N as part of it's part no.

Hood/bonnet and trunk/boot are the same pistons although they don't appear so when looking at the car.
