Just done an oil change on the 450, and was expecting some oil in the oil filter but there was none
Is this normal as I'm sure on the 350 oil went everywhere thanks to the strange position of the filter.
Should there be some sort of valve to stop the filter draining ? In filter or pump cover ?
Is this why sometimes it takes a while to register the pressure on the guages(yes I have 2 oil pressure guages !) and is probably priming the pump on every startup
Have I plumbed it correctly ? I'm sure when I checked oil came out of the middle, up through the filter and then down the outside as suggested.
Anyone know where to get the round gasket on the oil pump take off (goes to the filter etc) from ? As this seems to be weeping
Incidently when I drained the oil it seemed to be very very thin compared to the new oil going in.
Too many questions ,I'm starting to worry myself now but still using this weekend !

Is the filter mounted so that the inlet/outlet is at the bottom?
If so, sounds like there is no anti drain back valve in the filter or it is faulty.
It is a good idea to change the oil every 6 months or 4-6K miles whichever sooner. Use good quality 15W or 20W/50 mineral or synthetic .

Hi Paul
I can only comment on a couple of points, mine spilled out oil when I took it off for first oil change in my ownership (I'll remember to put a cloth underneath next time!)
AFAIK there is only 1 valve and that is the pressure relief one that should open at 1.0 bar.
What was the make/spec of oil filter that you took off?
- the one that came off mine was Unipart GFE 295, nice big one. I couldnt get hold of another for the oil change, so used the smaller one listed for the V8 Land Rover.
Apparently, our engines have high capacity oil flow, low pressure system. - don't fit a filter that does not open until pressure reaches 2.5 bar.
If you drained Mobil 15/50 out, this would look as 'thin' as water compared to say Magnatec 10/40.

Sounds like your filter did not have the non-return valve

See above, there should be a non-return valve in the filter and the oil pump PRV is on a spring but is not fully open until about five bar.

If I were you I'd be a bit concerned here. Oil filters are cheap.

What are you talking about? 15/50 is thicker than 10/40 both hot and cold.

Dont you rekon the Land rover v8 filter is any good then? - TVR independants use them a lot
In short, no and the independant's are worrying if they use them on Wedges unless:-

I repositioned mine so that the filter is the other way up. My car 390SE has no power steering so there was a convenient gap to the lft front of the engine. I repositioned the oil cooler at the same time.

What's that got to do with the price of fish then?
In all my years of servicing various cars owned, I have found they all spilled oil to some extent when undoing depending whether hanging or inverted - never been a problem though. I would say that most wedge owners only do one oil change per year anyway.
I think everyone will agree the 400 has one of the best accessable filters.
Anyone know what the purpose of this non-return valve is then? in the filter? - its not there to prevent oil spilling out at the filter change is it? Also you have to complete the oil change in pretty smart time, to to avoid priming the pump.

Nothing AFAIK; strange question for the wedge forum.

Don't be obsessed with a drop of oil at oil change times. The non return valve is in the filter and it's to keep the oil in the filter when you turn off the engine so that it will prime faster and so reduce engine wear. Nothing to do with the oil change, although it does help - if you have one.
