Looking to purchase a 87 280i with auto transmission. So far I notice that the tranny is slipping and brakes are weak (pedal goes quite low). Any thoughts?

Brakes are not the best thing in a Wedge. I personally wouldn't touch it with a weak auto box for more than a grand.

Check the transmission fluid level first.
Low level will make it slip, so may not be terminal.

I have a late 88 (infact I think it was the last 280i to come out of the factory) 280i US spec with auto transmission. It has only done 37500 miles (I have more than enogh documentation to varify the milage. With the documentation there is a recipt for a replacement box. The car would only have done 35000 when the box was replaced. The bill came to £1100 back in 2001.

Personly I would not go for an auto box unless you want one. I only bought my auto because of the low milage, condition and outstanding looks. You do loose a lot of power through the box with it being a 1:1 ration the 5 speed box is 0.85:1.

The breaks should not be too much trouble. If they are spoungee they may just need some fresh fluid and bleed at the best.

Out of interest what is the asking price?
