Having finally rebuild engine the last item to go on was the starter... and guess what the exchange unit I was supplied is wrong and does NOT have the solenoid mounted underneath, therefore fouls the manifold. Of course the factors where I got the exchange unit no longer has my original and cannot find a listing for the correct one! (SD1 Vitesse?).
Please can anyone give me a Lucas part no. for them to x ref or any other make part number (apart from Rimmer Bros No.).

The problem is that the same part number is used to cover a variety of starters some of which fit and some don't. I do know that some owner have resorted to opening all the units that a factor has to get the right one!

Common problem for MGBV8 as well.

Usually a high torque small bodied Range Rover unit will fit but again worth checking before parting with cash.

Try asking RT racing. They fitted a new solenoid on my starter last year. The solenoid has always been on top of the starter and the starter still fits under the manifold.
