Transducer unit 1986 350i

Hi,Can anybody tell me,what the Transducer unit is for,what fits oposite the crankshaft pulley.I have seen this unit in the Rover haynes manual.
My car has wires running down to pulley,but has no Transducer unit fitted,does this matter?.The wires run up from where Transducer unit is suppose to be fitted to a plug. It doesn't say what its for in Rover haynes manual,thanks Ken.

I believe that its a diagnostic unit with a plug on the end enabling ignition timing to be checked, rather than using a strobe and coil pick-up. Mine hasn't got one either.
