Boot Lid Gas Struts
Discussion
I've just had my gas struts regassed to 100N each, and assumed that when I pressed the boot release it would gracefully open up. It doesn't. If I open it up manually, though, it stays up perfectly. Do you all need to open the boot manually, or is there still something wrong with mine?
I changed mine for the ones from our old Citroen AX. It was great, you could push the button and hte lid would open all on it's own. Shutting it was a two handed job and it kept pushing hte lid out of position as well as trying to distort the mounting points in the fibre glass.
I decided in the end to cut my losses and refitted the originals.
Mine does have the added weight of the 400 type spoiler.

Gerry: mine's the same
Did once try (as Mick says) some struts from other cars (mine were ex-Range Rover) but at 210 Newtons it was a scary experience closing the boot (or bonnet) so went back to the originals.
They were probably originally sourced from the Scimitar or early Rangey.... though these struts are also used in industry for eg. sandblast cabinet lids.

When my old struts couldn't get it up anymore I fitted a pair of Mk2 Cavalier hatch struts. They fit straight on without any mods. They cost me a quid each at the local scrappy and lift the boot lid + 400 spoiler up a treat at the touch of the button. I do use two hands to close it though as they feel a bit strong but they have been on there 3 years without any problems.
posted a gas strut problem last week. Ordered new ones from RT, fitted them and found one side of the boot wasn't sutting down properly. Checked sizing and found the new ones were slightly longer. Fitted one of the old ones back on the offending side and it now works a treat. My problem was the boot lid was not staying up, so that's why I wanted new ones. Didn't realise you could have them gassed up again
Hi. sorry for the delayed reply, but just got back from China - no Wedges there!
I got mine regassed at Thames Valley Hydraulics and Pneumatics, 1A Hawksworth, Southmead Industrial Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 7HR Phone 01235-511001. Cost is £10 each. I expect a number of similar places will do the same, as it's a common problem. When I was having mine done, they were re-gassing 50 from a local bus company.
