How is the "walnut" type dash removed. Heater control levers flap around but do nothing and need to have a bit of direction for the winter. Speedo etc just pops out nice for bulb changes. Thanks.

quite tricky. take the radio out, pull the heater sliders off. put hands inside the radio hole, and you will find some washers and nuts to the right, and left of the radio slot. take these off, and the wood will become loose. next, gently ease the dash out, but becareful about disturbing the fibre optics.. they can be a real arse to get right if you remove them. time scales for the removal .. 45 minutes .. 4 hours to refit !!!

On another note my speedo and rev counter now pop out un-anounced. It seemed to be wedged in. Is there a bracket or clip that holds it in? I could knock up a metal bar that might do the trick but is there an off the shelf bit or alternative (or do I not press the loud pedal so much )?

First message,

I have just popped mine out today trying to get the speedo to work, I think possible transmission end fault.

But there is a u shape braket (typical gauge bracket for instruments) This faces towards the front if the gauge and is secured with 2 locking nusts on in front one behind centre thread. as it tightens it pushes against the pannel to secure.
