New thread so others can search it in need.

Ready to put the swirl pot back in now and just want to check my understanding of where exactly it should go. According to the drawing in the "Bible" it sits centrally between the front outlets from each fuel tank, and below them for gravity feed to fuel pump. However, this puts it directly over the driveshaft and it will foul it in operation.

Seems therefore that it must go one side or the other of the driveshaft, and I'm thinking the side opposite the fuel pump (i.e. offside) so that hoses etc have more room to bend to line up with the pump.

Does that sound like the default position (notwithstanding some owners seem to have theirs in some very odd places)?

Is it just held in place by its hoses or have others secured it to the chassis tubing via cable ties or something?

Thanks!

Based on what mine was like, and how I replaced it on my 280i....

I have got my swirl pot offset from centre, towards the offside so its not directly above the drive shaft, and then the hose from the outlet to the pump is attached to various bits of the chassis on its way to the pump so it cant get anywhere near the drive shaft. The swirl pot is just held in place by the hoses, as that's how it was, and I could see no easy way (or particular reason) to try and attach it somehow. It can move around a little but not enough to bash into anything.

On my 350 it is attached to the bodywork directly behind the drivers seat and slightly higher than the fuel pump. A couple of screws hold in place.

Thanks guys, too funny! 3 responses, 3 positions... dunno why I'm surprised!

I wonder how they came out of the factory? You'd think there would be some ex factory employees on this site wouldn't you? Their memories would be priceless...

Ok, offside of the driveshaft it is then!

Theory's fine but in practice it fits better on the nearside due to the offset driveshaft. even then, with the T at the top of the swirlpot level with the tank outlets, it needs to be tilted to clear the driveshaft. any higher and the tanks won't fully drain.

Photo of final position and hose to fuel pump (with inline filter). Hose is Parker Push-lok plus 836 5/8". hose is 2-3 inches from exhaust and all will be zip tied to the chassis.
