Round 25 - Now the fuel pump! Possibly!!

Boy is this car proving to be a learning curve...
Having spent the last 3 weeks trying to resolve the pop up light, now sorted, I went to move the car today in the garage. It starts fine lasts 3/4 seconds and then just dies.
I did leave it running on the driveway 2 weeks ago and I think I may have run it out of fuel. Put some in it cranked a few times and then started and ran ok for another 10 minutes or so.
There is no initial whine of the pump when the ignition goes live, dont know on a flapper if there should be? Also I have read that running them to empty is suicide as it drags the dregs in the tank into the pump as the car has no filter before the pump? Opinions please.

Running a Wedge or any car really on fumes is not good...Sounds like you have badgered the pump...I did it one day...i was on the motorway and i had enough to get to a garage which was about 10 miles away but then hit a bit of stop start and when i eventually got to the garage the car was already coughing and spluttering...Filled up and about a mile later she conked out and that was it...
You can put a pre-filter in..RT sells them...

I did exactly the same when i got my wedge running when it had been stood for 12 months.
i tried flushing the tanks and put a new fuel pump in afterwards.
To stop it happening again i fitted an inline filter but one that i could see what's in there.
It was cheaper than the RT one and you should see the crap it's stopped from going into the pump !!!
In fact i must order another one. app £7.50 from memory
What i had to do was find out the id of the fuel pipe to make sure i ordered the right one.

Hi Andy...Sorry I'm not sure about the Fleabay pumps as i have only ever bought the Bosch pumps not the "Bosch type"..Someone else may be able to recommend a good fuel pump....I think you are also confusing me with Marcus who did fit a pod motor from Robsport...
You should hear the pump prime if you turn on the ignition and move the flap in the AFM..It means removing the air filter...You could test the pump with a live to it..But remove the existing and only do it for a sec or two..If the pump works but not on the key then it could be the red Pektron steering module relay but more likely to be the pump.....

So testing it with a live which I was going to do in the morning. You say "remove the existing" existing what please clarify.
Yes I have one red relay on the board, I am assuming then that they are different to the others on the board.?

Check to see if you are getting a live feed to it from the ignition with a multi-meter...Not sure what you should see though...0.5?...If not then it could be the Red relay which is different to the normal relays...You can buy them at Glimmerbros...

I've never been a big believer that letting the petrol runs low allows crud into the pump - unless you drive a hearse and only corner at 5 mph. Whenever we go around a corner the entire tank contents slosh from side to side (see what happens to the fuel gauge around a roundabout.) And the crud it stirred about and will get into the pump anyway.
However if you let the pump run dry, then that's bad news, and might explain these failures a bit better.

I've found all the pump inc the Bosh ones to be very sensitive, and don't like being left, or having even the smallest crud passed though them.
I normally use a sytec pump as replacements as they do varying flow rates to match your power, plus are a fair price, not cheap but not expensive. they do pre-filters and after filters also. I always use both. works out about £200-350 for a full kit, depending on model, new houses, brackets etc.

Crank engine and power to the pump. Engine starts.
....Engine runs power dies.
Replace fuel pump relay (with new) and no power to engine on crank...
Install old relay and engine fires then dies 2/3 seconds later.
Swap relays around in block of 4 (various configurations) no go.
Back to original configuration with old relay and now WONTstart at all!! ARGHH
Fuses all good.

The first one had locked completely solid in that time so can only
assume that I ran the fuel low and pulled crud into it
After the 2nd one fitted I also have then had a pre pump filter fitted
(as well as the standard post pump filter)
The first pump replacement was supplied and fitted by my garage for about £150
The 2nd required the AA who charged me £260 for just the same part!!!!!!!
Apparently the Bosch pump is the same as a Vauxhall Cavalier/Vectra if irc
I will have the part number somewhere if you want

Check all connections...Makes sure the ECU plug is on tight and clicked into place properly...Check the plug on the ballast resistor on the N/S inner wing..Carefully look at the TPS but try not to pull it about too much...Look at the yellow wire as that seems to break first....Check the movement of the flap inside the AFM...Check the thermotime switch resistance...I take it you have a fat healthy spark....Do go replacing too much at once or you will lose where you were to start with..Check the wires on the back of the relay and fuse board to make sure none have managed to get pulled out...Which doesn't take much....Do you have a solid state Fuel Pressure Reg or an adjustable one
