Today I removed the gearlever gaiter from my 400SE to attempt changing the remote bushes. The leather gaiter seems to be stapled to four pieces of hardboard which look like they formed a rectangle until the corners broke at some time in the past. This looks like a fairly amateur way to fix teh gaiter. Is this the original way TVR did it? If it isn't, can someone tell me how the gaiter should be fastened to the car? Just to beclear, this is the leather gaiter, not the rubber sierra cover underneath it. Am I right in thinking the centre console (where the ashtray is) is one piece with the dash board or is there a join somewhere?

Hi mate...My 350i S2 has the gaiters stapled to a piece of hardboard..Bit of a pain if you want to replace them as you have to lift the transmission cover off..I was making a gaiter set for the Wedges but people were reluctant due to it being a mission...Ziga

Both of my Wedges have the same set-up. Gaiter stapled to a bit of hardboard. TVR quality design.

Mine's the same (and the rubber gaiter under it was definitely from the Sierra).
I think the 400SE dash is one piece with the tunnel so you'll have a bit more work...
In my experience there was no benefit in having access from the top, I changed the bushes from underneath with a bit of patience and a lot of swearing.

Mrs. Number 7 has just made a new one for the 400 (the old one was her doing as well) to go with the VW T5 rubber inner gaiter - cut down. My originally backing board was also hardboard, which disintegrated last time it was removed, so I replaced it with a piece of strong but flexible vinyl board, to which I glue one side of the gaiter only. It sits quite firmly in place once installed.

I am replacing my gaitors and I too have the crappy hardboard with gaitors stapled to it but it does work even though it is so cheap you cant believe it. I bet the new TVRs dont use hardboard! I have also replaced the rubber boot with the vw t5 one and it works well.

A 2008-2010 Subaru 2.5 Impreza rubber boot is very near the original. I had to cut the corner in a radius and shorten the other end a little and it drops right in place of the original.
