Getting fumes in the cabin. Not so bad on the drivers side but the wife "when conscious" in the passenger seat tells me it pretty bad.

Had my head in the bonnet today and cant spot a leak. Any suggestions?

Had a similar problem with my Tasmin race car and discovered a cracked gearbox housing.

Once the gearbox oil had warmed up the fumes were pretty bad.

Might be worth a look...

Check the rubber gear lever boot...Window rubbers if roof on..Also check to make sure you don't have a slight exhaust leak somewhere...

Never drive it with the roof on. Would be fairly nasty I think if did. Cant spot anything from the top side will have to get it on a ramp and have a look underneath.

Where's the intake for your heater? Is there an oil leak which drips on to the exhaust manifold or exhaust anywhere or a breather issue that's producing fumes under the bonnet which are then entering the cabin via the heater ducts?

I thought that was part of the joys of wedge ownership dont they all do that. Mine has stopped after I replaced the exhaust, boot seals, re sealed rear lights and replaced gear boot but if honest it was the gear boot that made the biggest difference.

Fumes in the cabin is a common occurrence in the Wedge. They all suffer from it to a degree and it's part of the fun of Wedge ownership. However, some suffer more than others and if it's to the extent of feeling dizzy, then there are things you can check. Sealing the cabin well, checking the rubber round the gear stick etc. More common, is a leak from the manifolds. Gasket or hairline crack in the manifold joins. Leak from exhaust itself, or a short tailpipe, not clearing the body, leaking into boot and consequently into the cabin.

Sometimes, what you are smelling may not be exhaust fumes at all, but oil fumes. If it is oil fumes, which can also make you feel dizzy, then you need to clean the engine breather system and check for oil leaks onto hot exhaust or onto hot manifolds. Finding these type of leaks can be time consuming and on a trial and error basis.

The only time I get fumes in the cabin is when in traffic, so i put it down to either the fan kicking in and re-circulating the exhaust and all the other smelly stuff, or just driving a car that has no roof and its every one else that smells bad. No help if you have a FHC.

My wedge is fine, but after driving it a good few hours/full days at a classic rally (tourist class of course, with some noise ears) then the 'normal' exhaust fumes get to me. Perhaps due to lower speeds and non-motorway routes. This is with the roof down and it seems to enter the open cabin. TVR way of getting high wink perhaps.
Under the bonnet old fashioned fumes/smells are present, but not entering and not an issue, even with a bit of oil on the exhaust from time to time...

Not sure if it's the same on the V8 bonnets, but on my 2.8, there is a seal around the air intake down to heater. It fastens to the bonnet moulding. Engine has the typical Cologne rocker cover 'oil seep' which I can't seem to stop, so can be a bit smelly at times.

Mine was a lot better when I replaced the original foam seal (which was falling apart).
I used door seal strip, 4 pieces cut at 45 degrees on ends to get sharp corners, and didn't even glue the corners.

I do notice that even with top down, you can get a 'suck back' effect depending upon the wind direction, which can pull exhaust fumes backwards, so it's probably something you can improve, but not fix altogether.

POSSIBLE - is it actually exhaust/oil fumes ? My wedge has a BURNED HOLE under the driver's seat, where the exhaust box was too close to the GRP.......sounds nuts, but if it's a weird smell ...

There's also a big rubber grommet around the speedo cable that usually doesn't fit too well... it was intended for sheet metal, not quarter of an inch of GRP.

Yeah, good one. probably other grommet holes around and about as well.... even the 'box' around heater hole in bulkhead isn't sealed all that well.......I guess it depends how far you want to go down that road.

The 2.8 with cable clutch have a big hole around the cable too - I didn't think of that !!
