do i need this lucas 2.c.e. thing if running carb?
Discussion
am having ignition issues, intermittent. bought the car last week as non-runner, checked plugs they were very very sooty, replaced plugs and 2 dodgy ht leads and it drove home fine apart from running hot (separate issue, found split heater hose) more tinkering today after changing heater hose and trying to burb cooling system of any air locks, engine ran fine for a while and then cut out and wouldn't re-start. checked new plugs that have only had maybe 2 hours use and completely sooted up. cleaned a couple of them and no spark when held to rocker cover. checked power to coil and there is nearly 12v to coil + terminal. but there are two components under the coil i don't recognise. they were definitely not present on v8 land rover 3.9 i had last year running on SUs.
one is a 'lucas 2.c.e. constant energy ignition unit' wired to both + and - terminals on coil and somewhere down into the depths of the engine bay. and the other is little pinky red box wired to coil +.
i am wondering if they are left over from the efi and i can delete them or if they are useful to me for anything? i want to simplify, repair and tidy all if the wiring where possible to make as reliable and trouble free as possible.
so if i have power to coil but no spark i am guessing issue with coil, or dizzi or ht leads?

Hi mate...Not sure what that is but on an EFI system that sounds like an ignition amp fault which is on the dizzy...But if it was then it would just die and not keep coming back to life....Plus one of the black and white wires from the amp goes to the ECU which you probably won't have being carb...And other goes to coil.
There is a red "Pektron" steering module relay that is fitted to most V8 Wedges which is a fuel safety cut off i believe.

That looks like a radio interference suppressor..... bin it.
I've no idea if the "lucas 2.c.e. constant energy ignition unit" is a standard fitment but I believe its purpose is to help the coil keep up with producing twice as many sparks per revolution as required by a four pot engine?

The little pinky box on the + of coil looks like a radio suppressor to stop interference from the coil.
I'm not sure what your running and cutting out problem is, as there is a lack of information and is not something easily diagnosed on the forum. You need to carry out more tests to find out why the plugs are sooting up etc. Compression test? electrical system? fuel system? fuel mixture etc.

hey zz, so the ignition amp is on the dizzi and if that stops it stops permanently until replaced? don't know about the pekron thing but there is fuel at carb, i can manually pull on carb end of accelerator cable and see the accelerator pump squirting 2 jets of fuel down the carb barrels.

thanks phillpot, nice to hear from you again across from the s forum ;-)
will bin the pink suppressor, cheers

yes i understand that tony, cheers, was really mainly asking if the 2ce thing was something necessary only for the efo and if i could junk it or if i still needed it.
i had originally thought the reason it was a non runner was the fouled plugs and damaged ht leads but clearly there is something else causing the re-fouling of plugs that are only 2 hours of use old and now no spark. would lack of spark cause fouled sooty plugs? i would have imagined lack of spark would cause wet plugs!/ or would it be the other eway round, would the sooty plugs cause the lack of spark and they would be caused by something else like wrong mixture?
will investigate further tomorrow, with spare coil, spare plugs, etc...
thanks

The suppressor is to sort out the RFi issues . Was not really effective on a fibre glass car.
Difficult to see from the picture but looks like an early range rover amplifier model like this

If you have a collection of wires going to the coil coming from the box you need it to suit the ignition wiring you have.
You could replace this with a later version of the ignition or as you have a carb go for a Lumanition type replacement kit

here's what it looks like from other angle chris, what does it do? only 2 wire from the farend of it go to coil, one to pos and one to neg, the other two are cut and then there are some more down the side and can't see where they go to, but looks like they may go to the dizzy.

As it says, it's the ignition amplifier module. Instead of using points and condensor like the olden days, there's a pickup sensor (actually a coil of very fine wire) inside the distributor. As the dissie rotates the lobes on the shaft create a voltage in the pickup which is too weak to be of any use by itself so the 2CE unit 'amplifies' it to a level that allows it to fire the coil in the same way as the points used to.
Essentially it was called 'moving with the times'
Nothing to do with whether you have carbs or injection; if you throw it away you'll have no sparks at all, simple as that.

ahhhhh thanks for the explanation wedg1e, much appreciated.
