targa top seals
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I know that i've asked this question on the facebook group but i'm hoping someone can help me.
I need the seals which fit on the edge of the targa top against the top of the door glass.
I've found the rest of the seals and fitted them, i just need these to finish it so that i can take it for the mot and get it on the road.
The seal is not a one piece item it's made from a u channel and the rubber / sponge seal profile is glued to it.
I've tried various profiles from seals direct but none of them come down enough to reach the top of the glass.
If i can't find the correct seal then i will try and cut them off the old roof and re glue them but it would be nice to use some new seals.
Thanks
Mike

I tried replacing mine a few years ago and couldnt find anything, but was told that griff/chim ones would work. I got some but they are held in via an aluminum strip that screws into the gap were the original seals attach and although they worked I was never happy with them so returned to the originals. Not sure why they never really worked although they looked far better.
Hi Zig,
Thanks for that.
I bought a number of seals from Seals direct and while they would fit the overall depth was not enough to come below the top of the glass so you end up with a gap not very waterproof !!!.
The seal is all i need to finish off the car and then i can get it mot'd and on the road.
As i said the original seal was just an edge strip with a profile glued on.
Once that's done i can start on the FHC.

Hi Mike...Was it either of these two?
SRS1905...HHS694

I have requested a sample of each...HHS694 look promising although there is still no channel for the top of the window....

Hi Zig,
Apologies for not getting back to you sooner but mad at work.
I ordered various seals,
Yes i tried SRS1905 but it is approx 6mm short of the top of the glass.
I tried a multi shape seal ETS2581 No good and i tried SRS1915 again no good.
The problem was that they are not deep enough to reach down to the glass although they looked the to be a good fit.
I am hoping to have a play on the web over the next couple of days if i get the chance.
I've also looked at various door seals but the profile is in the wrong direction to reach the top of the glass.
I hope you have better luck than me.

Hi...I have posted this on the Wedge owners UK site as well...Today i had another play with the top targa seal and this is my finding.
I replaced the piece of edge trim with a piece of original door seal which is still obtainable and then used a small 10mm wide strip of 1mm nitrile rubber sheet on the edge where the window top sits...
The door seal fits with the bulb facing the glass and the two ends are cut on the edge trim but not the rubber ...You need a long ear at the front of the targa to stop water coming in...I also trimmed the overlapping piece..
I cut some of the bulb off the back so that the glass pushes it against the door seal on the windscreen pillar.(Looks better now).
The 10mm strip is stuck to the recess where the glass top sits...It is just behind the edge of the mohair and just touches the bottom part of the bulb seal..Any wider and it will push the bulb seal away from the door glass...Life would be so much easier if the Wedge had what the later cars have and thats a sensor that drops the window an inch or so when you unlock and then up again when you lock.
So without the above I'm not sure how this is going to work on the drivers side where the door has to be shut with the window up....

So far so good...
Cheers

Hi Ziga,
Are you doing this as item that can be purchased ?
The reason i ask is that this is all i'm waiting for so that i can get my car on the road.
I would be willing to give this a go so that i can use my car.
Let me know

I was hoping to, Even though there is some trimming of the seals needed to suit, I can cut and send the pieces out with a fitting diagram as there are a couple of worthwhile little pointers, As long as the cost of the seal and postages are met then its no problem...
From the off-set this does look like a possible solution..I will try the driver side tomorrow if its not raining as the trim is well and truly stuck on that side..
This seal so far does what it needs to do...A water test is needed which i will do once i have fitted the drivers side..
If you need it in a hurry then you could get some door seal and i can send you some pre-cut nitrile strips the correct width....So far its saying its dry in the morning.....

This is the door seal

Hi Peeps..Well the saga continues...The seal on the passenger side seemed to work but the driver side didn't...So i have modified a different seal..Actually its 3 seals that replicate the profile of the original...These will be joined with waterproof 2 part adhesive and sealed with waterproof mastic...If they offer a good solution then i will make them up for you at no extra cost then it would cost you to do...In fact cheaper as it does work out expensive just doing it for one...TBC....Ziga

Hi Zig, can you please add me to your list if you get it sorted, I'd like seals for both sides please although at the moment its only the drivers side that's leaking like a sieve
let me know the total costs and I'll transfer the beer tokens accordingly

Tim
Will do sir....

Hi Peeps...I have been messing with the seals again today...I tried the one that i made up to the exact profile of the original and it don't bloody fit...What doesn't help is my drivers door drops around 1/4 inch so not good ..
Could anyone please do me a massive favour and take a picture of your Targa side seals..Both sides as i have a feeling they should be facing the same way instead of oppositely faced...As it is now the drivers side is okay with an original door seal and the passenger side needs a bulb and tail type seal...Would be so much easier if i could find what the heck the original was from....
