No main beam flash when lights are off
Discussion
Hi all,
When my lights are off on my 390 I have no main beam flash but when the lights are on it works fine ?
NO lights flash when the lights are off except the dash main beam illumination sign.
I have had a look at the switch and it seems ok.
Any help appreciated
Many Thanks
Ian

As mentioned this morning matey you need to to be systematic with the electrics, what have you done to assume the stalk switch is ok? Check the flash relay with the stalk in the flash postion and tap the relays with a screw drive handle.
Before you changed the driving lights did they work as they should??

On my 280, there is a separate power feed for the 'flash' part of the switch (stalk), which comes from the IGN power, so on mine, flash won't work with the ignition key out. Yeah, that's probably wrong too, but at least I know it.
I don't know about the later wedges, but perhaps it's as simple as a blown fuse ??? Worth a check I reckon....
After that, you'll have to get into the wiring loom, which is not much fun. As always, look for dodgy connectors, dodgy earths, that kind of thing.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Right, took the steering cowl off and all the wiring seemed ok.
The contacts for the flash main bulb are ok too.
Checked/whacked/re seated the relays (I can here them click fine).
What I have also noticed is that with ignition on, lights on, when you put main beam on or flash main beam (which both work fine when lights are on) the fog light switch comes on too ?
The fog lights (or driving lamps whatever you call them) will not come on with just the fog light switch, they only come on with main beam/flash ???
Ian, maybe my steering column switch is faulty ???

Ian I suspect that when you did the driving lights you have moved something hence the other issues. Given that the flash works when the side and dipped is switched on it will not be a fuse I would have thought. In terms of the how the flash works it ranges from the early cars that would lift the pods to flash to driving lights only. Various options were played with as the car developed from - pods stay down when on side lights , to pods up and dimmed on side lights - to the later cars that have the driving lights come on when you are on main beam only. Flash should work in all positions including off with the ignition on. There is a simple mod to keep the pods down on side lights but on my car the main headlights are dimmed on side lights so they may as well be up but hey ho!

The fog/ driving lamps do need the headlamps on in order to work. The fog lights (or driving lamps whatever you call them) will not come on with just the fog light switch, they only come on with main beam/flash ???

It could be you have a failed (or wrongly installed) diode... usually located somewhere around the relay board but hey, it's a TVR
.If you're getting 'some' response to the flash stalk it would suggest the switch is OK and the fault is elsewhere.
Just to clarify that I have no flash at all with the lights off or on side lights. I only have flash with dipped beam.
I looked at the diodes, I have two of them and they seem ok.
I will take a pic of my relay board and perhaps that will help.
I suppose worse comes to the worst I could just drive around with the lights on all the time then I'll have flash/main beam when needed.
Thanks all for the replies

Mines a. 1988 350i. I can only flash when pods are up on dipped beam. Driving lamps are wired completely indepentantly to everything else so I use them to flash. I can run on side lights with pods down. The pods come up on second click of the switch. I'm quite happy with set up as is.
