I find that when my 400SE is in the garage on a hot day, the expansion of the fuel in the tank pushes fumes out of the vent pipe and fills the garage with a strong petrol smell. Has anyone fitted a small carbon canister in the vent pipe to remove the fuel vapours or found some other way of removing or stopping the vapours from getting into the atmosphere? TIA
I've posted this on FB as well. They all do that, I would be interested if anyone knows of a way to modify the fuel system to make it safer.
Aside from the smell of fuel, you need to be careful when filling with fuel. Never fill more than the first click of the pump (Auto shutoff). And even then don't park up straight away without running the car for 30mins or 15 miles. They have a habit of pressurising with a full tank and pumping fuel out of the vent line in the rear nearside arch. If you remove the cap when this is happening, fuel will gush out of the filler neck. Both my 305i and 400se do this.
I mentioned this to a friend with a 390se and he replied "Mine doesn't do that" to which I replied "They nearly all do it".
Inspection of his vent line found it to be parted at the joint behind the carpet and 2-3" of fuel in and beneath his boot carpet.
I remember attending the Rusty Nail Run in 2018 up in Pebbles. There was an Esso station over the road. A few of us filled up ready for the off and returned to the hotel carpark with full tanks. Yep you guessed it, melting tarmac everywhere.
ATB KY.

I nearly burnt down an ancient Belgium forest by over filling ATB KY.

I think it may be because the Wedge fuel system is a closed loop one so needs the atmospheric vent to the N/S rear wheel, best to vent the garage if you are concerned
You could look into something like a carbon filter for the end of the pipe?
Cheers
