Hi,
I am struggling to get my 280 to tickover after a long layup. I have checked / changed the obvious (plugs, leads etc) but it still wont idle. The plugs look pretty black and oil and there is a smell of petrol (running rich ?) any ideas ?

Petrol does go off after a while, try topping up with fresh stuff. Gummed up injector maybe? And I'd replace the plugs as well, rather than cleaning them.

If you really mean there's oil on the plugs, then you may have stuck rings. Try checking the compressions. If it's just black (rich)it could be sticking injectors. As suggested, try replacing the petrol, as it does go off, and put a dose of injector cleaner in with it. Failing that, you need to dig a little deeper. Best of luck.

Best to get a hold of the Capri 2.8i injection supplement, and make sure the cold start fuel pressure modulator is working, they tend to get a bit corroded/gummed up if left for a while. They are tricky to set-up properly so that you can start the engine at all temperatures.

To all,
Thanks for all your responses, I put some fresh gas in and it seems to be ok now.
