At the stroke of midnight I lit the trail of gunpowder along the well trodden path to the garage. All the wood I could find found itself on the funeral pyre. The old goat next door was getting very nervous as she peered thru her net curtains, watching me scavenge in her bin for more newspaper.
Raided all the petrol I had out of the lawnmower and hedge cutters as I wanted it to go woooommmmfffff!!first time, not to let the old girl suffer too much.
I did have a small tear in the corner of my eye as I bent down with lighted fuse.
BUGGER ME I COULD NOT GET THE POWDER LIT....
Must have some sort of relay gone I thought to myself. Checked everything seemed fine. It was a safety match. Ha Ha Ha!!
The wife came to the rescue tho with a spare lighter she keeps hidden away just in case she needs one of those wacky fags to calm her down when I come in late at night totally stressed.
By god it did go with a bang too. Frightened the hell out of the dog in the house and she's stone deaf.
Glowed brighter than a bright thingy. Black smoke, could have sworn I heard her scream something, like, "I will haunt you you welsh faggot". ( in a Blackpool accent ).
Its now Sat morning and I am sifting thru the embers, trying to find anything thats left, but nothing. The nightmare is over. At last. I can start to rebuild my life after losing a year of it in the garage with HER!
Now, would I have the same touble with a Griff I ask........the story continues

p.s just kidding chaps...

I hope so....

She nearly catch's every time, you know, cranks over and you get that sound, engine goes lumpyas it fires just before it starts. Please don't ask me to spell it, but there is a difference. This lasts for 5-10 secs and then this sound goes away and just cranks. There is nothing wrong with the engine, was sounding quite sweet when it was going. And that exhaust note mmmmmmmmmm!!
Could it be the coil breaking down. No one around here stocks one and is open on a Sat afternoon. Bloody muppets watching some old fatrs play an old song badly in front of a billion people.
Oh! politics don't you just love it!
Theres me doing my nut and no where to go

Did you say in a previous post that there is NO fuel feed problem?

Try leaving the fuel filler cap off. If that works, clean the tank vent pipe.

People spend £100's trying all sort of fixes and it works out to be something daft like this!

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious or speaking to the converted.

There seems to be no problem with it fueling. Good fuel pressure. Inj's ticking ( Sorry clacking!! ). Good spark from the HT coil lead onto the plenum. Baked the spark plugs last night at 150 degs. Cleaned them til they were like new. Put the battery on charge and jumped another from my own car while trying to start it. Nearly, just does not get more than a few secs and then nothing.
Checked the red relay's resistor and diodes. Swapped the main and fuel pump relays. Checked all fuses. Checked all wires for looseness ( fiddled at the back of the relay board ). Checked the connectoins on the coil and ignition amp. Renewed the two wires coming from it to the coil, as somebody suggested. Still no good.
Just took the ECU apart to see if there was any tell tale sign of anyting burnt.Nothing.

Did you try some easy start or similar? Sometimes gives it the impetus to catch and keep going.

Are you disconnecting the fuel line to literally waste fuel by showing it pumping away?

Later solutions wouild be replace coil - which you have already tried.

There can also be mysterious behaviour due to a faulty (though it looks OK) rotor arm - replace - also replace dizzy cap. Try no filler cap first.

If it starts and runs for a few seconds, it's (IMHO):

* likely to be fuel related (electrical problems tend to be binary ... except possibly the ECU);

* unlikely to be vent related (pressure won't drop enough in the tank after only a few seconds).

What noises can you hear when the engine stops (ignition left on)? If pump/injectors ticking, then I'd look closely at the fuel line - possibly the filter. If all is silent, then I'd look at the breathing/mixture.

Ugly -

I must say that I am very junior in the scheme of things relating to mechanical matters - I'm not an engineer. There are many on here of really serious levels of expertise. It was just a thought I had had. A removal of the filler cap recently helped a car I know that would get a few yards and then die.

Similarly I know of a case where a car would just cut out and not restart for half an hour or so. The rotor arm was found to be faulty (the engineer cut into it and it just was not normal) and all was fixed when replaced. Hidden cracks in dist caps can also play havoc - they are often difficult to see.

If the cylinders are filling up with unburnt fuel, might it be useful to dry them out and clean the plugs again just in case? Maybe try a hairdrier? OK - so it's unfiltered air; but if it's for a short time and it helps?

I hope your efforts are soon rewarded.

streaky - it is not starting at all, it nearly gets there and then doen't. Its very hard for me to explain. Its just at the moment when it starts to catch and then it stops and goes back to plain old cranking. When the ignition is turned off all is quiet, except for me biting into another knuckle. If you turn ignition on and open the AFM flap the pump works, so that sequence is OK. It doesn't seem to be over fuelling just what remains after not starting.

firefox - it doesn't matter if youre not an engineer, its when you are and you get this all the time. Thanks for the suggestions, I will go and try it, you never know. I have checked the rotor and dizzy under our microscope in work together with ultra violet crack detect spray, all seems to be fine. I will bake the plugs again after the missus has finished cook the Sunday roast. Maybe I could sneak them in under the roast potatoes

Suggestion:

Clean, bake and replace plugs.

Remove fuel pump relay.

Waft some easy start into the air filter.

Crank her up.

If she fires, replace fuel pump relay, and spin her over for no more than a few seconds to avoid flooding.

Might be an idea to jump a second battery on to ensure plenty of current.

Enjoy your dinner.

The pump should prime for 2 or 3 seconds after you switch the ignition on but before cranking - without needing to open the AFM flap.

Er, Ithought the pump bit was dependant on what was in yer chips. The 400 pumps up before hand me old 350 only pumped on cranking.

Only on the hotwire, not the flap system.

Yikes!

Hope you bit into roast potatoes and are not now spitting spark plug shrapnel!

When I went slot racing I used to bake my newly wound armatures in the oven!

Pretty sure my old 350 used to prime before cranking, and the 400 also did both when it was running a flapper and now that it runs Motec.
