Help needed with 350i parts

Keen readers of this forum will know that at the end of last week I entered the world of TVR Wedge ownership, and that at the beginning of this week, the clutch master cylinder failed :smash:

My car is a 1989 350i covertable.

I was advised by the forum that the part I needed was Unipart GMC1015. Being mechanically inept I took the car to my local garage, and gave them the part number. He phoned a Rover parts supplier and was informed that the part number had changed, and it is now STC001015EVA, and the part was ordered. I was also informed that if the part number I had given was incorrect, the part could not be returned, and I would have to pay for it.

Yesterday the garage called me to say the part had arrived, but it didn't fit. The part that was removed from my car was marked as Girling(70) 64676310.

The garage has now asked me to source the correct part, or a kit to refurbish the existing part. They have also indicated that I am expected to pay for the incorrect part.

Hi Tom,
I think that is shocking behaviour from your garage and personally I would scream and shout.
Phone Neil at Tvrcarparts as per your link. I'm sure he would agree to take back anything that isn't what you need.

Hi Tom, sorry it didn't work out. I quoted the part number from the TVR wedgepages site which I also provided a link to. At the top of the page on the site is a disclaimer regarding the information provided, and it's really up to you to confirm it.

It could be that the part number relates to a component used by TVR on a different years model, they did a lot of that sort of thing depending on what was available in the end of line parts bin. If the garage can't arrange to exchange the unit for the right one with at most a percentage handling fee, you may be dealing with the wrong people in my opinion.

I can always ebay the incorrect part, so no problem there. I'm more concerned about getting the correct part, and getting the beast back on the road.

I'd recommend you follow dickymint's suggestion and ring the tvrcarparts people or RT Racing, I'm sure they would be happy to have a look at the serial number on their replacement units to see if it matches your girling part number. Their price is pretty much the same from either tvrcarparts or RT Racing as noted on the forum in reply to the post on your original thread.

Thanks all. Neil at TVRCarParts has come up trumps, and the part will be with the garage before 9am tomorrow morning.

If anyone needs a UNIPART GMC1015 master cylinder, please let me know.

I think the garage should really have checked themselves the correct part. I think that is called customer service.

Since you told them the part number and they did say you would have to pay if it is wrong I don;t think you can argue really.

Caveat emptor.

I would use a different garage in future though. One that is a bit more keen to work an this sort of car.

"Covertable" eh? Thou shall not covert thy neighbours ox or his TVR Wedge.
