Help Needed - Gearbox
Discussion
I went to a recent TVRCC meeting and a fellow wedge owner was interested in how much vertical play I had in my gearstick so he gave it a pull upwards. Now I get a noise from the gear stick as if the bottom of the stick is bouncing on something solid, you can also feel it with your hand, it can be stopped by pulling the stick upwards whilst in gear. When in neutral every thing is fine. It is also worse when the car is cold and gets better as the car gets up to speed.
Anybody any ideas what the problem may be?

You'll find that the remote assembly is bouncing on the propshaft. It doesn't cause a particular problem but if you leave it to get worse, the play on the gearstick may cause you to wear out the gaiters (rubber and leather) due to the excessive movement after a while. If it gets really bad you will have trouble selecting gear.
Seems to be the year for it.
Bushes can be had from Rimmer Bros. in Lincoln (they also do a polyurethane set I believe) or perhaps from Rover dealers, but you'll be old and grey before you see them...
I thought I could do the job from above, but had to resort to jacking up to get at bolts properly.

Interesting! - Rimmers are sending me 8No poly bushes for just under £20. Went for 8 following a conversation with somebody who had done the job already. I have removed the bushes from the bolts at the back of the remote as they look to be the problem which is 4 bushes. I have left the ones at the front of the remote as they look okay.
My question is how many bushes did you need in total as it looks as though there are 6 bushes installed at the front of the remote!

Hi Me round the corner. The front housing works the same as the side mounts. You put a bush each side of the casting and the dowel through the middle to keep it all together. The only thing different is that on mine there was a washer between the back bush and the gearbox on the top mounts. Those top mounts are the a**se to do but when you see how stiff the polys are I think you might want to do them. Any probs give me a call.
Oh that makes sense, thanks Paul - Even with my pit I still haven't quite worked out how best to get the required leverage on the front bolts!
For every body else the part number from Rimmers is UKC854poly - Bush 5sp Remote
Paul I will send you an E Mail about a couple of other things!
