400se what max bhp,when?

Hope somebody can enlighten me on this.My 1989 nonhot wire 400 seems to run out of breath above 5000rpm.What should the max bhp be and at what rpm? thanx :driving:

275 bhp at what revs i do not know, but i find i don't need to rev past 5k anyway

FWIW, TVR claimed 268bhp when it was new, ( at about 5600 IIRC. )

There's never a lot more at the top end unless you do some serious tuning.

My rev counter only works when the fan is on.

There seems to be enough bhp to frighten the living daylights out of both me and any living thing within a couple of hundred yards or so.

On a rolling road mine did exactly the same thing with about 230 bhp at 5000 rpm

I was speaking to Mark Adams at the BBWF and he was saying that if the ecu had been replaced at somepoint with a Range Rover job then it would only rev to 5000 and be limited ? He did say what markings were on it but I forget !
I need to try my 4.5 ecu on a rolling road, but this gives me poor idle

The flapper set-up quite often gives a lean top-end as standard. Adjusting it can compromise the bottom end of the rev. range by making it too rich. The physical restriction of that afm doesn't help breathing, although you can spend lots of wedge on different afm / mapable systems, bigger/multi throttle bodies, bigger trumpets, manifold etc etc. to cure it. A run on a rolling road should identify whether the mixture etc. is right.

Mine revs nicely to 6k +. TVR quoted 268bhp, but I doubt that. Even with a ful rebuild and sympathetic upgrades I reckon mine is "only" around 260. Still, thats plenty fast given the torque available. Its been known to frighten alot of other beasies on the road too!

I have a dyno figure of 308 at the flywheel in my 400SE (hotwire '92) take of 75bhp for transmission, and you have a nice and healthy 233bhp at the rear wheels. Mine revvs to 6500rpm (wilder CAM), but since the last engine imploded, I keep the revvs to a max 5000 these days.

The new Engine was spec'd to have stage 3 heads, a wilder CAM, uprated valve springs and modified lifters. Its not been fully setup due to other financial constraints, so is in the garage under covers.
