So there we were Lynne and I out for a drive in the 400 when travelling at a sedate 50mph for once! there was this allmighty bang from the front of the car.Went to apply the brakes only to experiance vibration and nasty noises.Checked the car over by the side of the road,all seemed o.k?.Limped the 400 back home using the handbrake to slow down.When the front wheel was removed there was the problem.One of the brake caliper bolts was missing,who ever changed the brake pads last hadn"t locked the bolts back up!!!!!! so I am now going to check everything just in case something else has not been done properly.Take heed everybody and safe driving

Why were the caliper bolts loosened to remove the pads? Its only a couple of pins??

Second what Matt said - on the front of the 4 pot 'princess caliper' you only need to
remove 2 pins to change the pads.

In car brake check: Coasting to a halt uphill, gently apply brakes and as she stops, listen and feel for any 'clunk' or 'rock' as she settles back against gravity.

Can't figure out why they would have taken the caliper bolts out just to change the pads.

Might have loosened them if the pads (or a piston) were jammed ?

Mine has a bracket that has tabs that you bend to lock the two bolts. It also doubles as the bracket for the brake hose. Seems odd this has managed to come out completely. Pleased to hear your OK though.
