Hotwire AFM

Just called in the local Landrover dealers for a temp sender unit. Got talking to a nice bloke behind the counter about things and bits, he reckons the early Hitachi / lucas AFM as fitted to my late 400 is unreliable and I should change it. What do you think ? Anyone know what sort I could change it for ? Are the later ones a straight swap? (is there a later one ?)

If memory serves, the very early flapper AFM's were made by Hitachi, and the rest were made by Lucas, or at the very least had Lucas on the label not Hitachi!

I'm pretty sure you cant retro fit a hotwire AFM to a flapper setup, because the flapper ECU has no supply for the heating of the wire.

The flapper AFMs arent that bad, the only thing that makes them unreliable is old age.

Well reading from "How to power tune Rover V8 engines", it says the early type was 3AM labelled Hitachi, and the later type, 5AM labelled Lucas, part no. ERR5198. They are apparently interchangeable, but no longer available new. These are Hot Wire units.

Ah, I may of got my wires crossed then, sorry (and sorry for the pun), been working both flapper and hotwire (and Weber 500 carbs for that matter) recentyl and my mind is somewhat addled.

Are you sure the 3AM and 5AM are directly interchangeable , fairly certain that at least the EPROM in the ECU needs exchanging to match either of these. AFAIK one gives a maximum scaled output of 3V the other 5v for full ehgine load.
Talk with the likes of Mark Adams as he normally has reconditioned ones in the back of his Disco and he understands this shit .

He's L.G.A. when it comes to Rover V8 engine management isn't he?
