Rev range on a 350i

Hi Wedgers,

Errrrrrrr.........what can I say..........had a bit of an incident today. The overmat got caught on the accelerator cable and floored it under load on the motorway in second gear to its maximum rev limit. After changing my pants and calming down I wondered what consequences could be suffered. It wouldn't go any quicker when it hit that level, it won't matter if I've only done it once will it lads? Do they have a limiter on the rev range to stop idiocy? It ran fine afterwards I was justa bit panicky!

Happened once or twice on my old 280i - scary !
I had to turn off the ignition.
On the last occasion it snapped the fanbelt.
No harm done though. I fitted a new (correct) rotor arm with built in rev' limiter, and fixed the offending carpet.

I would have thought that if you had broken something on your motor, it would be immediately apparent.

What did it rev to just out of interest? Or were you not looking.

No rev limiter. Max is about 7,750.

On a standard 350 the hydraulic lifters will start to pump up before 6K rpm, holding the valves slightly open and acting as a natural limiter. No point in taking one past 5.5K rpm, as peak power is just over 5K rpm.

Looked like it was approaching just over 6500 revs. It was absolutely screaming, sounded great but still bloody scary!
