Hamer car lift
Discussion
There was a comparison test involving 9 car lifts in November 2004s "Practical Classics" magazine. I have it in front of me. The Hammer lift you mentioned got a score of 14/20. The best buy was the "CJ Autovip" (18/20) which is about half the price of the hammer lift.
If anyone can host the test (or can talk me through how to do it), it is 6 pages of colour A4. I can also scan and email it if anyone wants it?
Cheers,
Lee.

Yes you do have to jack each corner in turn but this can be used in a standard garage and when you move easily taken with you.
Initial thought was a pit but when costed out came to similar numbers and this can be used in either side of the garage.
Lee I would like a copy of the article

I was after a hydraulic scissor-lift on Ebay a while back: unfortunately it coincided with a neighbourly bust-up and I thought I wouldn't be helping my case if I had one of those in my drive when the council turned up
IIRC it sold for £510 and was mobile, seemed ideal to me. I know a guy who lifts VW caravettes wih one of the same design.

I'd appreciate a copy if you can mail me one. It's something I've been considering for ages but, as always, when there's a choice between driving it and getting under it - - - well, you know which wins.
I don't know if this was included on the published test, but some time ago I came across a trailer with lift included, and it was a pukka item. Seemed rather good to me. Hopefully someone else may have seen this 'cos I've probably lost the details.
Added:- I think in fact it was featured on Pistonheads 2 years and a few months ago!

IIRC scissor lifts get in the way of the chassis
That one had two 'channels' for the car wheels to run into. The seller claimed he used a trolley-jack in the channels if he wanted to get the wheels off
IIRC Steve Heath said he has one, not sure if that's the one he bought...

Thanks for all the advice and I agree if I had the space for a permanent fixed lift the four post would be the ideal, and we all dream of the idea. I also intend to move in the next few years so the cost of installation twice etc must also be considered. Perhaps when I do move to the more rural areas I will have space and then I will have two ways of raising car (with a lotus and a TVR this could be usefull)
I going to have a look at the alternatives raised in the articles thanks for posting it

Many thanks, David. I'll read it in bed tonight.

I've got a scissor lift platform which is used for lifting loads etc, not one one that is often sold for cars with a Morgan or MGB on the top. Consists of a 6 by 4 foot steel base plate with all the innerds inside. Folds down to around 100mm. Goes under the Wedge and lifts it up 1 m which is fine for my garage as I don't have much height clearance, like most people. For oil changes, suspension work etc it is fine. For more heavy stuff I have a set of big axle stands which I lower the car onto - these provide around 1 M clearance with the platform lowered.
The platform is great as I can lie on it and with the remote move it and myself up or down to reach bits. Great for removing gearboxes as they can go on the platform and simply be lowered once pulled clear.
