I've fitted a scoop just behind and under the radiator that feeds an 80mm hose that in turn feeds a box with filter and afm in it, leaving just a straight 10cm flexi to the plenum.
Huge improvement in intake air temp - cured pinking even in 40 degrees and at higher speeds the scoop provides slight postive pressure which seems to help response.

The filter sits in the recess where the expansion tank is. DJE wanted to play around with a cold box and plumbing to suit but the Range Rover block didn't lend itself to it, mainly time and money run out. Not sure what the advantage and disadvantages are etc, I suspect a lot of hot air off the header passes that way?
I shall enquire at the next service if I remember.

I have seen a photo of this done on a Wedge but I cant find it again now, the AFM and AF where fitted in a straight line, the AF sitting in front of the header tank.

I have done the same as chunder and got a 80mm pipe feeding fresh air in, it made a noticeable difference.
Back on the induction pipe... They reckon the curled/corrugated pipe disturbs the airflow, hence that’s why the smooth induction pipe is better. Just not sure if the small piece works on a wedge. They also reckon the sound is better two.

well on my S the induction is a lovely alloy pipe across the top of the exhaust manifods which gets very hot .. for a short induction set up on wedges look for pics of steve heath's wedge racer pre throttle bodies .. i'm pretty sure he had the *in line* arrangement.
This is the original set up on my SEAC. Not only is the induction pipe short, but those clever people at TVR have cut holes in the inside wing where the airfilter lies and this allows cold air to be pass through the air vents in the front spoiler and along inside the wing on that side to the cut holes and hence to the airfilter.
Dont know whether it makes any difference!
I was planning an amalgam of ideas; like Jeff Morgan's car, with the expansion tank moved (I plan to fabricate an alloy one... to sit up under the windscreen, perhaps) and straight hose run from AFM to throttle body. The 390SE has the benefit of bonnet vents at the front left so I thought I'd look at boxing in the left side of the engine bay, creating a 'plenum' drawing from the vents.
But I'm long on ideas and short on time to do any of them...

The most important factor is induction air temp, in an ideal world air would be drawn from outside the engine bay, sadly very difficult with a Wedge, it's true that areas around the top of the bonnet near the windsreen will get more fresh air whilst driving at speed, therefore the modification as per Jeffs car is an improvement over standard, the standard filter position for all the big wedges was on the inner wing.
The smooth pipes will always flow better than ribbed, if you imagine the air travelling at over 100mph through the pipe you can then appreciate/ understand the benefits.
On a powerful motor say 270+bhp, by running a smooth pipe from meter to plenum you should gain approx 2 bhp if you fit a straight smooth pipe you can double that figure, if you then fit a length of smooth pipe (24"+) you will gain even more, but if the air temp rises as a result (such as in the standard V8S application which uses a metal pipe over the exhaust) you will probably loose power, so in order of importance air temp first then induction pipe spec.

Another little mod done, I have mounted the K&N where the expansion tank was with the AFM clipped to it with a short smooth pipe to throttle body (5-6 inch) I think I might drill some vent holes in inner wing as redwedges5s.
Next job is to remount the old expansion tank where the AF used to be for now.
I would like to fit a chim type header / expansion tank can this be done ??
