I've had to replace the Dizzy cap and rotor arm on the 400 and all was going smoothly, until the rotor arm came off and the dizzy shaft has popped up about 1/4" and will not relocate.

How do I get it to relocate as it just doesn't want to go back. i've moved the crank over by hand (bleeding knuckles now)but still no way will it relocate.

Help anyone??

Probably not the same but I managed to displace mine. Turned out I had dislocated the weights as well. Not sure how to check for that but it needed re building.

Ummm, just looked at a picture of the dizzy in the Range Rover Haynes. I can't see how the shaft has popped up and then refuse to go down again. The drive gear on the bottom is well over half an inch tall by the looks of it, so I doubt its disengaged from its drive. Perhaps turn the engine over with a spanner to see if it still turns the dizzy to rule this out.

All I can think of is that the centrifigal weights located in the lower part of the dizzy have become dislodged or something stopping the shaft from going down. Perhaps when the rotor arm came off it sent a shock through the shaft and made the weights go loopy, twisting them or something. If it was me, I would slowly start to strip the clear protection plate off, and see if something has become stuck. There arent many parts in there, so as long as your careful and take your time it should be obvious as to whats wrong.

If the worst comes to the worst, you may have to take the dizzy out and inspect it. Perhaps the drive gear on the bottom has come off is dislocated. Careful if you do take it out that nothing drops into the engine. My money is on the weights being twisted though!

I'd just pull the distributor out and have a look at it. It's not THAT difficukt to get it back in and timed correctly. Sooner that than damage the camshaft if the dizzy HAS broken somehow...

Success!

A bit more fiddling and a very gentle tap with a wooden block and it just popped back down and relocated - I think that it must have been the weights that had moved slightly.

Thanks for your help and this damned car won't beat me (I hope)
