Amusing moment....

Thought I might share this
Trying to start moh up yesterday involved numbnuts under the car arc'ing the current from the starter solenoid between the two contacts with the aid of a long chisel whilst connected to a starter pack and the ignition on.
I meanwhile had disconnected the air intake and was happily squirting a whole can of carb cleaner up the spout whilst the engine was turning over nicely.
Cue a large bang
followed by a four foot flame which not only blew the large piece of wood that was holding the bonnet up into the road but also had my ears ringing for about 10 minutes and my left arm positively buzzing for a bit. Damn good show I thought. Bastard thing didn't start however at least we have identified the fact that the starter and solenoid are fine, but it's the 12v feed to it that's kippered, probably a dodgy earth so that's a bit of a bonus.
It's a laff innit.
PS......I have a sneaky suspicion the petrol gauge is lying as the car is on a port side slant slighly down at the arse end It's currently showing halfway between empty and 1/4......could be lack of petrol
Dicky, is the gauge slightly optimistic?...I shall update the thread when I have 5 minutes to throw some petrol in...Hopefully without torching myself.

The starter solenoid is fed from a relay, not the ignition switch, you did know that...?
On my car it's the bottom right relay on the panel: if yours is hanging ou then it should have a brown (perm 12v feed), 2 blacks (earths), and two white/reds. One comes from the igniton switch (should go to 12v when you crank) and the other is the actual feed to the solenoid (12v when cranking - if the relay is pulling in).
You could swap the relay for another one; poke 12v into the white/red on terminal 85 (short wire link from the brown feed) to rule out the ignition switch; or poke 12v down the other white/red (87) which will go direct to the solenoid and prove whther the wiring is intact.
To see if it's an earth fault, use a jump-start lead from the starter casing direct to the battery (-).
One possibility, if the starter is making a loud clonk but not spinning, is that the pinion shaft is covered in clag that's preventing the solenoid from pulling fully in to power the motor once the pinion is engaged... quick strip and clean should fix that.

Mike are you saying the starter motor is now working but the car won't start?
If so, I would say that you have dislodged a wire when you put the relay board into its new position.
From memory it will be on the back of the Bosch relay - it feeds the ECU to fire the injectors.
I say this as this was the last problem I had.
