Lights that is!
Oh what fun it is to be a tiver. Lights pop up in side light mode, side lights, headlights and main beam all work. Switch on headlight mode and lights drop back down but remain light and side lights stay on. Tempted to leave it as it is as everything works, albeit in funny fashion. Swapped some relays around but no difference. Could it be a resister failure?

it,s the 1way diode in your fuse box that,s the problem i suspect the connection at fault

im a auto electrician and have come across this before
if when you are looking at the fuse box the fuses are on the top the relay at the bottom
it,s the top right fuse holder that has a home made diode connection push in it make sure it,s also the right way round.
just pulled it out of my fuse box and got the same symptoms
post me back when it works just to say it,s now ok

if when you are looking at the fuse box the fuses are on the top the relay at the bottom
it,s the top right fuse holder that has a home made diode connection push in it make sure it,s also the right way round.
just pulled it out of my fuse box and got the same symptoms

SteveAh, that'll be the later idea then, where the headlamps have to come up with the sidelights.
I still can't see how a diode fault would cause it as the sidelight feed is still present even when the headlamps come on... but without a 400SE wiring diagram to hand I can't help: the 280/350/390 are different in operation, sorry!

Sidelights on send headlights up - flick switch forward, another pulse to headlights and they would go down? (just trying to get your diagnostics working Ian).

What a wonderfull place PH is! You were spot on with the fault. I had taken the diodes out suspecting loose connections, they were loose so I renewed the spade connectors but didn't realise they were one way diodes. 50 50 chance of putting them back the wrong way
4 hours of fiddling with fuses and wires
and fixed in 5 minutes this morning Thanks a lot
