Coolant Temp

My temp gauge reads around 70-75 degrees when driving at 3000 revs, the prevoius owner told me it reads 20 degrees lower than actual coolant temp, which would mean the water is at 90-95 degrees most of the time. My kenlow thermostat/fan switch is suposedly set to 90 degrees, although I can't verify this as the adgusting knob is missing. My question is, how can I check the actual temperature of the water? (sorry the question is disjointed)

Get an IR remote reading thermometer. Maplin were selling them for about £30. Just point and read.
