The wedge I broke (1989 model from which you had the interior) had just 1 diode although the Steve Heath bible does indicate 2. They should be plugged into the front of the relay board.
If it helps, it should look something like this:
If you have it, you could test it to see if its duff?
Another thing that might be worth trying (if you can find it) is making sure it is the right way round. A doide will only work one way round (i.e. signal/feed going right to left but not left to right).
If it helps further, according to the Steve Heath bible, your looking for a yellow wire going into the diode and either a blue wire with a white stripe OR a brown wire coming out.

Lee and the other responder Thanks for your reply's they might help. But I can't remeber seeing anything in the places you mentioned or like what you have show me (Lee)
Both my 350i are early. no 1 and no 20 on the production line. No 1 works OK its no 20 which is causing the problem. I only got it last weekend and I found that the lights all worked OK. But when I came to flash, the main beam light on the dash came on but the head lights failed to pop up. Looking into this I found the the fuse for the diode was missing. Replaced that and the lights poped up and flashed. But the when I put the lights and head light's on they were stuck on Main beam no matter what I did. Remove the diode fuse and the lights work OK ?

Think I have partly solved my problem. On the early 350i the diode in fact was plugged into the top right of the fuse board, like a fuse. This is according to the drivers handbook. I presumed it should be a standard fuse and put that in place hence the problems.
Now all I have to do is find a replacment diode! Any idea's

I have one (in the above photos) spare but was hoping to hold onto it...
If anyone else can oblige / say where you can get one from, great.
If not, I'll have a look for any identifying marks on the diode - you might be able to pick one up from maplins? They might also be the same as the doides in the electric wing mirrors?
If its just a case of you getting your wedge through the MOT, I can post you my diode to borrow until you get one sorted?

Basically, any silicon rectifier diode of more than about 1A rating will do. You could use something from the '1N4000' series, a 1N4006 for example... if you want a higher current rating to be on the safe side, then a 1N5401 would do.

I purchased a couple of 1N5401 (To be on the safe side) today from Maplins Cambridge, at the huge cost of .16p each. I fitted one in the top right side of the Fuse panel and it fixed the problem.
Pistonheads solve the problem again.
All I need to do is now get a early left hand electric door mirror and she is finished and will be back on the road after two years being laid up! (By the previous owner!)

You won't find them in the Steve Heath book, either, so don't bother looking.
